Jose Mourinho once waited in car park for referee after Real Madrid v Barcelona

Jose Mourinho has enjoyed a remarkable career in football so far.

Widely regarded as one of the best coaches of his generation, the Portuguese tactician has managed some of European football’s biggest clubs, including FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Now he’s at another top club, Tottenham, and in the process of revamping the squad after replacing Mauricio Pochettino midway through last season.

Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilon both arrived from Real Madrid on Friday, while Dele Alli could be heading out after he was left out of the Spurs squad to play Southampton Sunday.

Paris Saint-Germain are interested in signing the England midfielder before the transfer window closes on October 5.

Some football fans - and perhaps a few pundits, too - believe Mourinho’s best years are behind him.

He’s been sacked from his previous two jobs (at Chelsea and Man Utd) while results and performances since taking the reins at Spurs have been inconsistent.

Mourinho was arguably at the peak of his powers between 2004-2012, the period in which he won multiple titles with Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid.

Aside from his success, his antics from this period of time are also legendary.

Back in January 2012, during his second season as Real Madrid manager, Mourinho was photographed in the Camp Nou car park waiting for referee Fernando Teixeira Vitienes.

Mourinho’s team had just been eliminated by Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals following a 4-3 aggregate defeat.

Real Madrid came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 in the second leg, thanks to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, but it wasn’t enough to send Los Blancos through to the last four.

Madrid were shown seven yellow cards and one red (to Sergio Ramos - surprise, surprise) compared to Barcelona’s two yellows and Mourinho was keen to have words with the referee after the match.

According to a report in Mundo Deportivo at the time, Mourinho is alleged to have said to Teixeira: "What an artist, how you like to screw up professionals!"

The exact words were probably a little lost in translation but you get the picture.

Mourinho’s decision to wait in the car park has made for a great meme down the years.

And now you know how it came about.
