After announcing the signings of Thiago and Diogo Jota in the space of 24 hours, it seems unlikely Liverpool will make any further purchases. When you consider they also added Konstantinos Tsimikas to their squad earlier this summer, Liverpool fans have got to be satisfied with their transfer window. But if Jurgen Klopp could make one more signing, everyone knows which position it needs to be - centre-back.With Dejan Lovren and now Ki-Jana Hoever leaving Anfield, the Reds are short of cover at the heart of defence. And that much was obvious ahead of the trip to Chelsea with both Joe Gomez and Joel Matip ruled out through injury. It meant Fabinho had to drop back into centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk.p1eimqg3fr12vq169aoud11fo88cf.jpgTimo Werner running at Fabinho would only end one way…surely. But that one thing turned out to be Fabinho pocketing the £48million striker during Liverpool’s 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge. The Brazilian was absolutely brilliant and didn’t give Werner a sniff. He completed the most passes, the most recoveries, the most interceptions and the most clearances.

It was a stunning performance.

Just check out his individual highlights:

Fabinho’s performance was so good that even his manager, Klopp, was impressed.

“Come on, Timo is a top player. With space, there is no real football tactic which can defend him when he has the ball,” Klopp told Sky Sports.

“But Fabinho is obviously a pretty good challenger, good in one-on-one situations, and did outstandingly well.

“If Sadio didn’t score two goals, I think the Man of the Match contender would have been Fabinho.”

Despite his brilliant performance, Liverpool fans will be keen to discover when Gomez and Matip will be fit again.

Klopp gave injury updates on the pair.

“Not a lot, but enough," Klopp said when asked what was wrong with Gomez and Matip.

“So, Joe is not a real concern – it’s probably only today. Same with Billy [Koumetio]. With Joel, we have to see – it could take a few days longer. [It’s] muscle.

"After injuries that’s how it is. He looked perfect in the pre-season since he trained. But now he got a little problem and we have to react, so that’s how it is. That’s why we start how we start.”

It’s since emerged that Matip may actually be out for about a month.
