Rangers FC have big plans for the season ahead.

After a turbulent few years the light Blues are finally in a position to truly challenge for their place at the top of the Scottish football system.

Celtic have held a monopoly over the game that we all over the last decade after winning the Scottish title in nine consecutive years.

If the Bhoys are successful this time around they'll have secured a historic 10-in-a-row, establishing themselves as the undisputed dominant force in Scotland.

But Rangers won't allow that to happen without a fight.

Steven Gerrard has transformed the Gers since he took over the club and this season looks like we'll be seeing a genuine title race for the first time in a long time.

Rangers are top of the table at present after picking up 20 points from their opening eight games, meaning that they're already showing the sort of resilience that's needed to win silverware.

But with Celtic just one point behind with a game in hand, Gerrard's side must be looking to kick on.

It's been a successful summer transfer window so far with the likes of Jon McLaughlin, Calvin Bassey, Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten and Leon Balogun arriving at the club.

But it seems that they're not done yet.

Reports from the Scottish Sun have claimed that Rangers are closing in on a deal for Daniel Johnson.

The Preston North End star has been linked with a £3million move to Ibrox - a deal which could take place before the weekend.

The midfielder is out of contract next summer and has expressed his desire to move to Glasgow.

Johnson would certainly add real quality to Gerrard's midfield.

The Jamaican scored an impressive 12 goals last term while also creating a further eight for his Preston teammates.

With a U-turn on his future unlikely to happen, Alex Neil's side will be keen to cash in if possible in order to reinvest in the squad ahead of the close of the transfer window.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This would be a great deal for Rangers.

Daniel Johnson is a player of undoubted quality who has been a key player for Preston North End in recent seasons.

His ability to score and create from central midfield is second to none, while he's also comfortable keeping possession and fulfilling his defensive responsibilities.

While a £3million fee is significant for Steven Gerrard's side, it is a deal that will be worth it to get the move wrapped up.

With Johnson out of contract next summer Rangers would be at risk of losing their target in the January transfer window and so moving quickly looks to be a wise move.

I've no doubt that the Preston man will be a success if a deal can be completed.
