What a summer it's been for Tottenham Hotspur.

After finishing sixth last term the focus this summer has been on building a squad of players who can challenge for silverware.

Spurs have certainly managed that.

Deals for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart and Matt Doherty got the summer up and running, before a spectacular double deal for Sergio Reguilon and Gareth Bale was confirmed last week.

Those deals certainly got pulses racing, but the excitement isn't over yet for Tottenham supporters.

With the club still looking at new additions it could be an exciting couple of weeks.

As well as the much-covered need to sign a striker, Spurs are also keen on a deal for a centre-back.

Ruben Dias of Benfica is one name who has been heavily linked with a move, but according to Football London's Tottenham reporter Rob Guest, any deal could depend on the club's ability to offload a number of fringe players.

Writing in a Q&A for Football London, Guest said: "Ruben Dias is a player Jose Mourinho is a big fan of but a striker is priority first before looking to sign a centre-back.

"Spurs would need to raise quite a lot of money if they want to sign Dias from Benfica before the deadline.

"He reportedly has an £80m clause in his contract and that will be out of their price range.

"Obviously Spurs would try and drive the price right down if they attempt to move for him, but a new striker is priority first and foremost."

Guest added: "Spurs are only going to spend within their means and hopefully there will be a bit of money coming into the club through player sales.

"It's not like the club have splashed the cash like Chelsea have this summer as they've spent big trying to upgrade their squad.

"The club have done some very smart business so far and have got some excellent deals in Doherty and Hojbjerg."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Signing Ruben Dias would be some deal for Tottenham Hotspur.

Valued at £31.5million by Transfermarkt, the Benfica defender is regarded as one of Europe's top young centre-backs at present.

That means that it's no surprise that the interest in him is so high.

A deal for Dias will not be cheap, however.

Spurs have a somewhat bloated squad at the moment and so a big focus in the coming weeks will be on moving players on.

If that can happen then a deal to sign Dias could become reality.

But given how tough the market is this summer it may be the case that a deal for the Portugal international has to wait.
