Liverpool have really cranked their transfer machine into gear over the last few days.

Kopites were strapped in for another summer of little to no spending at Anfield, raising serious questions about their ability to retain the Premier League title while their rivals splashed out.

But it's clear that the Reds are indeed heading the advice that you should build while you're ahead, making two impressive signings on back-to-back days last week.

Liverpool open their wallet

First, the big one: Thiago Alcantara. The Spaniard had been linked with a move to Merseyside for what felt like a decade by the time the deal accelerated to the point he departed Bayern Munich.

But sign he did and Thiago made an impressive start to life in the famous red jersey during the win at Chelsea, completing more passes than any debutant playing no more than 45 minutes.

However, the Reds' spending wasn't finished there as they caught everybody off guard by rapidly sewing up a deal for Wolves' Diogo Jota to provide competition for their brilliant front three.

Koulibaly up for sale

You'd think that this point, given the club's often-rapacious spending habits, that the purse strings would have been tightened up again at Anfield, but fresh reports suggest that might not be the case.

Like all top clubs, Liverpool seem to have their ears to the floor whenever a truly world-class player becomes available and we're pretty sure that Kalidou Koulibaly fits that criteria.

Seldom does a transfer window go by without the Napoli defender being linked with a move to the Premier League, but it seems more certain than ever that the 29-year-old is set to leave.

Reports across the continent have long claimed that Napoli want to cash in on the Ballon d'Or-nominated defender and Manchester City are even believed to have agreed personal terms.

Liverpool trying to persuade Koulibaly

However, it now seems as though Liverpool could scoop the Senegalese international from underneath the noses of their rivals if French publication Le Parisien are to be believed.

As translated by getfootballnewsfrance.com, the report claims that Paris Saint-Germain are no longer in the race to sign Koulibaly because of his €70-80 million asking price.

Most notably, however, Le Parisien explain that Liverpool are now 'actively trying' to convince Koulibaly to sign for the Merseyside club via the use of his compatriot Sadio Mane.

It's noted: "The Reds are trying to actively push hard to convince the player."

Too good to miss out on?

Nevertheless, it is also claimed that Koulibaly wants to move to the Etihad Stadium, though City's inability to agree a fee with Napoli this summer indicates that may not be possible.

Reinforcing the centre-back position surely won't be high on Liverpool's priority list this summer, too, so whether they'd pay a fee close to £70 million remains to be seen.

That being said, world-class players don't come around every year on a silver plate, so perhaps it would be worth Liverpool dipping into their bag of gold one more time this summer.
