What a summer it has been for Tottenham Hotspur.

Being honest, last season was nothing short of a disaster for Spurs as matters off the pitch had a detrimental impacts on results.

That led the north London side to a sixth place finish in the Premier League, meaning that they missed out on a spot in the Champions League.

However that sort of underachievement won't be tolerated this season.

Jose Mourinho has been brought in to get the team into the top four and to look towards winning some silverware for the club.

To help him achieve those objectives Daniel Levy has certainly put his hand in his pocket to bring some notable additions to the club.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart and Matt Doherty all arrived at the club earlier this summer, before a high profile double deal really signalled their ambitions.

Sergio Reguilon and Gareth Bale were the duo who really changed the game for Tottenham, with both players promising to be among the top players in the Premier League this season.

But Spurs are far from finished.

Mourinho is still keen to sign a central defender this summer.

The club have been short of quality following Jan Vertonghen's departure at the end of his contract, and now efforts must be made to bring someone in.

Football London have claimed that Spurs are in formal talks over a deal for Milan Skriniar.

The Inter Milan defender is a long-term target for the north London club and it seems that they're keen to get a deal done.

But striking that agreement could be easier said than done.

Reports from Tutto Mercato Web have claimed that while Tottenham are favourites to complete a deal, Levy is unwilling to match his current asking price of £55million.

However Spurs are said to be open to a swap deal involving Tanguy Ndombele to get a move done before the transfer window closes.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Milan Skriniar could be an absolute game-changing addition for Tottenham Hotspur.

The Inter Milan defender is one of the best in Europe at the moment and that means that it's no surprise at all that he's attracting such interest.

Valued at £45million by Transfermarkt, it seems highly unlikely that the Serie A side would allow him to leave the club on the cheap.

Why would they? They know exactly how good he is.

However if Spurs are desperate to sign a quality player to lead from the back then they may have to pay the fee required to get the deal done.

If they don't then it could be a long season.
