Chelsea transfer news: Blues set asking price for goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga

Chelsea want rid of Kepa

Chelsea confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy on Thursday.

The Senegalese joins from Stade Rennes in a deal worth £22 million and it's expected he'll be the club's No.1 this season.

Frank Lampard had been chasing a replacement for the error-prone Kepa Arrizabalaga all summer and now he finally has his man.

Despite only arriving on Thursday, it's reported that the Blues could throw Mendy in at the deep end on Saturday evening, to make his debut against West Brom.

So where does that leave Kepa in all of this?

After Willy Caballero impressed once again in the Carabao Cup this week, it's actually not out of the question to suggest Arrizabalaga could be Chelsea's third-choice 'keeper going forward.

Leaving your club-record signing who cost £72m just two years ago on the bench all season isn't exactly a great look.

Kepa will be benched at Chelsea

So instead, the Blues could look to move him on as soon as possible.

According to The Sun, Chelsea will ask for at least £40 million for Kepa this summer.

Given the current transfer climate, the club are aware that they're unlikely to recoup that sort of money, so would also be willing to let the goalkeeper leave on loan.

Chelsea won't get £40m for Kepa

But, it's unclear if there would be any real interest in the player.

Kepa's errors since arriving have been magnified by his huge price tag and it's unlikely any top club would be willing to spend £40m on him.

His wage is also a factor. When joining Chelsea, Arrizabalaga signed a seven-year deal until 2025 worth around £150,000-per-week.

Chelsea signed Kepa in 2018

In the eyes of many, he's failed to justify that salary and shifting such a high earner will pose a big problem for Frank Lampard.

With under two weeks of the transfer window left, it remains to be seen if Chelsea can sell Kepa, or if he'll be forced to sit on the bench for much of this season.
