Frank Lampard’s Chelsea have had one hell of a summer transfer window.

After overcoming a recent transfer ban, the Blues clearly want to make up the 33 points deficit between them and champions Liverpool last season.

To do so, they’ve spent more than £225million in a crazy spending spree. And we’ve still got another few weeks remaining before the window shuts. Not to mention when it reopens again in January!

Remarkably, Chelsea have now spent the EIGTH most of any club in a single season, taking into account spending in both the summer and winter transfer window.

But which clubs have spent the most in a single season?

Let’s take a look:

20. Napoli (2019/20) £179.29

Hirving Lozano was the biggest signing, costing £34m. But there was also Konstantinos Manolas (£32m), Alex Meret (£23m) and Stanislav Lobotka (£18m). Smaller fees were paid for Andrea Petagna, Eljif Elmas, Amir Rrahmani, Diego Demme, Giovanni Di Lorenzo and David Ospina.

19. Man Utd (2017/18) £181.03m

Jose Mourinho spent a lot of money on Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic, Victor Lindelof and…Alexis Sanchez. Not the greatest way to spend more than £180m.

18. Monaco (2019/20) £182.49m

It was a season where Monaco signed 15(!) players. The most expensive was Wissam Ben Yedder for £37m.

17. Everton (2017/18) £185.49m

Who expected to see Everton in this list? Well, the signings of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Michael Keane, Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen, Cenk Tosun and Theo Walcott all cost in excess of £20 million each. And that doesn’t even include the free transfer of Wayne Rooney.

16. Man City (2015/16) £190.05m

Back when Manchester City spent £68m on Kevin de Bruyne and £57m on Raheem Sterling, many fans would have questioned their spending. Looking back now, they were both incredible signings.

15. Chelsea (2018/19) £190.55m

Chelsea spent a world-record fee for a goalkeeper - £72m on Kepa Arrizabalaga. That didn't go well. They also signed Christian Pulisic for £57m and Jorginho for £51m.

14. Man Utd (2019/20) £195.32m

United spent £80m on Harry Maguire and £50m on Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the summer. But their best signing was in January when they signed Bruno Fernandes for £47m.

13. Man City (2016/17) £196.23m

John Stones was the most expensive signing of the summer, costing £50m. They did also bring in the likes of Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus, Ilkay Gundogan, Claudio Bravo and Nolito.

12. Juventus (2019/20) £204m

Juve spent big on Matthijs de Ligt, while Danilo Dejan Kulusevski, Cristian Romero, Luca Pellegrini and Merih Demiral saw Maurizio Sarri open the chequebook.

11. PSG (2018/19) £207.22m

PSG spent £130m to sign Kylian Mbappe on a permanent deal in the summer of 2018. Leandro Paredes and Thilo Kehrer also cost more than £30m each.

10. PSG (2017/18) £217.27m

One year earlier, the French club signed Neymar for a club-record £200m.

9. Atletico Madrid (2019/20) £222.24m

A lot of Atleti’s expenditure went on Joao Felix, who cost £113m. They did also snap up Marcos Llorente, Mario Hermoso, Kieran Trippier, Felipe and Renan Lodi.

8. Chelsea (2020/21) £226.53m

Chelsea have already spent the 8th most - and we’re not at the end of the first transfer window! Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech and Edouard Mendy have all arrived for significant fees, while Malang Sarr and Thiago Silva have also joined on a free.

7. Real Madrid (2009/10) £235.93m

The season in which Real Madrid signed Cristiano Ronaldo for £84m. They also signed Kaka, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso. Money well spent!

6. Juventus (2018/19) £237.02m

Again, Cristiano Ronaldo is involved as he set Juventus back £105m. But they didn’t stop there as Joao Cancelo, Douglas Costa, Leonardo Bonuci and Mattia Perin all arrived at Massimiliano Allegri’s side.

5. Chelsea (2017/18) £237.73m

Chelsea have to spend another £11m this campaign if they want to break their season record which they set back in 2017/18. Back then, they signed Alvaro Morata for £59m, Tiemoue Bakayoko for £40m, £34m on Danny Drinkwater and £31m on Antonio Rudiger. They’ll be hoping this summer’s signings fare a little better…

4. Barcelona (2019/20) £249.14m

Barca spent £108m on Antoine Griezmann and a further £67m on Frankie de Jong. Neto, Martin Braithwaite, Junior Firpo and Emerson also arrived at the Camp Nou.

3. Man City (2017/18) £289.75m

Pep Guardiola felt he needed to improve his defence so spent £58m on Aymeric Laporte, £51m on Benjamin Mendy, £27m on Danilo and £47m on Kyle Walker. Bernardo Silva (£45m), Ederson (£36m) and Douglas Luis (£10m) also arrived.

2. Barcelona (2017/18)

The second most spent in a single season came from Barcelona as they splashed large sums on Philippe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembele, Paulinho and Nelson Semedo. Three years on, two of them have left the club while the other two haven’t been a success.

1. Real Madrid (2019/20) £362.65m

No club has ever spent as much in a single season than Real Madrid last campaign. Eden Hazard was obviously the biggest outlay, costing Zinedine Zidane’s side £103m. Then there was Luka Jovic, Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy, Rodrygo and Reinier.

Wow.
