Manchester United were awarded a match-winning penalty against Brighton... AFTER referee Chris Kavanagh had blown the final whistle. VAR intervened after Neal Maupay handled the ball inside the area, leading to Bruno Fernandes taking and scoring a dramatic spot-kick in the 100th minute.With the final kick of the game, Man United secured a 3-2 victory on the south coast. Just moments before the madness and the final whistle, Brighton thought they had secured a point, scoring a 95th-minute equaliser through Solly March.
It was the least the hosts deserved, but the point was snatched away from them seconds later when Maupay gave away a penalty.
Absolutely unbelievable. You probably won't see anything as dramatic as this again for a long, long time.
It was actually Brighton who took the lead, scoring a penalty of their own in the 40th minute. Maupay, before he became the villain, scored a cheeky Panenka.
But within 180 seconds, Man United had equalised. Lewis Dunk turned the ball into his own net after good work from Nemanja Matic, who kept a Fernandes cross alive.
With the two sides level at half time, it was all to play for in the second 45... and the drama kept on coming.
The hosts thought they had been given a second penalty when Paul Pogba was judged to have fouled Aaron Connolly inside the box.
But VAR took a second look and overturned the decision. Minutes later, Marcus Rashford went up the other end to score, making it 2-1 to United.
Brighton pushed and pushed for an equaliser with Leandro Trossard alone hitting the woodwork no less than three times.
It was March who became the unlikely hero in the 95th minute though, heading home to finally equalise. But as we know, the real drama was still to come with the last-second penalty.
Truly, it was a remarkable day on the south coast. We love the Premier League.
