Aston Villa have really kicked on this summer.

Last season saw Dean Smith's side narrowly avoid relegation after making their return to the Premier League.

It's a huge step up between the Championship and the top tier, but Villa did enough in the transfer market to bridge the gap.

Albeit, it did take until the final game of the season to secure their survival.

This term, however, they're not taking any chances.

So far Aston Villa have spent £74million in the summer transfer market as they look to up their game for this season.

That includes the signings of Matty Cash, Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez and Bertrand Traore.

But it seems that the Midlands side are far from done yet.

Smith is keen to strengthen his squad further before the transfer window slams shut on October 5.

One position that has been touted as an area for improvement is in attack.

Villa struggled for goals last term and while Watkins and Traore add a bigger threat to the opposition's defence, they need a frontman who is a reliable source of goals.

Plenty of names have been linked, one of whom is Odsonne Edouard.

The Celtic striker is one of the most lethal frontmen in Europe, leading to interest from the likes of Crystal Palace and Brighton.

According to Alan Nixon of The Sun, Edouard could be on the move before the end of the window as his contract situation rumbles on.

The striker is yet to sign a new contract at Parkhead leading to reports that he could be angling for a move away.

Nixon claims that all three clubs are monitoring his situation with Edouard possibly at the centre of a bidding war in the next week or so.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

What a deal this would be for Aston Villa.

Dean Smith is determined to sign a new striker before the close of the transfer window and the Celtic man certainly ticks all of the boxes.

Valued at £13.5million by Transfermarkt, Edouard has scored four goals in five appearances so far this term.

That just goes to show how lethal he is in front of goal.

It seems like a matter of time before the striker is playing in the Premier League with various clubs being linked with a move over the last year or so.

If Villa can get a deal done, it would be quite a coup.

The 22-year-old is only going to get better over the next few years and if Dean Smith can get him to Villa Park then he'll certainly reap the benefits.
