Football fans have been left fuming following yet another controversial handball decision in a Premier League fixture.Tottenham were 1-0 up and on course to secure all three points against Newcastle United deep into stoppage time when the visitors were awarded a penalty following a VAR review.Andy Carroll’s header hit the back of Eric Dier’s arm and the incident was reviewed on the pitch-side monitor by referee Peter Bankes.Despite the fact Dier did not deliberately handle the ball, the referee awarded the spot-kick due to the current controversial laws of the game.Even if a player hasn’t intended to handle the ball inside the box, a penalty will still be given.Callum Wilson stepped up and converted Newcastle’s penalty with the final kick of the game to earn the Magpies a fortuitous point.

Jose Mourinho, incensed by the decision, marched off down the tunnel before the Bankes had blown the full-time whistle.

The Spurs boss then conducted an interview with Sky Sports shortly afterwards and was surprisingly restrained with his reaction.

“I don’t think ... I think about my team’s performance, very good; a really good team performance,” he said when asked to give his thoughts about the decision by interviewer Laura Woods. “First half, amazing. It should be 3-0, 4-0 easy but [Karl] Darlow was fantastic. We hit the post and they managed to survive.

“I’m not going to comment on it [the handball]. I don’t want to speak about it. If I want to give some money away I will give it to charities, I don’t want to give it to the FA so I prefer not to comment.

“At half-time [Steve] Bruce was super happy with the result at 1-0. He knows football. He knew that at half-time it could be three of four-nil and they got their point.”

Mourinho, per BBC Sport’s Shaman Hafez, also told reporters: "Spurs is big club but our history in terms of trophies is not as big as others clubs and I realise that.

"I love to be here, I don't see myself leaving for another club but I realise now the difference between a club with big history and others."

Following the decision to award Newcastle their penalty, Sky Sports’ co-commentator Jamie Carragher echoed the feelings of most by saying: "Disgrace, an absolute joke.

“Newcastle fans will be ecstatic, I understand that. But every other fan in the country will be saying exactly what I’m saying.

“This is a joke. Whether it’s the Premier League, the FA, FIFA, [Pierluigi] Collina. Whoever is involved in this stop it. Because you’re ruining football for everybody. Absolute joke.”
