Tottenham Hotspur are facing a pivotal week ahead.

As well as facing three matches in the next seven days, the club are under pressure to wrap up some business in the transfer market.

Spurs have already managed to complete some significant deals already this summer, with the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart and Matt Doherty joining the club from Southampton, Burnley and Wolves respectively.

Then you've got the signings of Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid - a double deal which was a real statement of intent.

But based on the club's mixed start to the new season, it seems that more will be needed.

Four points from three Premier League games is an average return, and one which will need to be improved over the season if they're to improve on last season's sixth place finish.

Jose Mourinho has been tasked with finishing in the top four and challenging for a major trophy, and that's why efforts need to be doubled as they seek further additions.

A central defender is seen as a real priority for Tottenham as they look to finally replace Jan Vertonghen, but another position is arguably even more crucial.

Of course we're talking about a striker.

Harry Kane has shouldered Tottenham's goal scoring burden for far too long and that's why the club are so determined to bring in support for him.

Countless names have already been linked with a move to the north London club, but so far there's been nothing remotely close to a breakthrough.

However according to fresh reports Spurs may have found someone who fits the bill.

Football Insider have claimed that Tottenham are targeting a surprise move for Christian Benteke.

Described by Roy Hodgson as someone with 'the ability to score goals', the Crystal Palace striker faces an uncertain future at Selhurst Park after falling down the pecking order.

But with Spurs desperate for another body in attack, it's claimed that Mourinho has 'given the green light' to a potential move.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Well, this would be a big surprise if it was to come off.

Valued at £9.45million by Transfermarkt, Christian Benteke would certainly be a left-field addition for Tottenham Hotspur.

The 29-year-old has score just six goals in the last two seasons for Crystal Palace, signalling the fact that he's far from being a prolific striker.

As a target man Benteke could certainly do a job for Jose Mourinho, and perhaps that's why he's being targeted.

I don't think that Palace would stand in his way if Spurs were to make a move.

The only concern would be the reception of the Tottenham fans who will surely be underwhelmed at the prospect of Benteke being the man to seemingly help them back into the Champions League.
