Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal: Referee Craig Pawson's funny reaction to Alexandre Lacazette's miss

The Premier League and refereeing controversy go hand-in-hand at the moment.

It feels as though England's top flight has become an absolute minefield for controversy since the implementation of VAR and the new handball law that has everybody, ironically, up in arms.

So, imagine our surprise when Liverpool vs Arsenal, despite being one of the tamer affairs of the 2020/21 campaign, still flared up some contestable incidents.

Liverpool win against Arsenal

The first came mere seconds into the Monday night clash with Sadio Mane appearing lucky to not at the very least be cautioned for elbowing Kieran Tierney in the face.

Nevertheless, the Senegalese forward went unpunished and was on hand to level the scores for Liverpool after Alexandre Lacazette fired the visits into an unexpected lead.

His arrival at the back post seemed to spur Liverpool on to victory with Andrew Robertson turning the game on its head shortly afterwards and Diogo Jota eventually smashing home a third goal.

Lacazette misses glorious opportunity

There, however, came the second, albeit more tenuous, refereeing grievance with many fans on Twitter opining that Jota should have been unpunished for handling the ball before shooting.

And one of the biggest reasons that Arsenal fans in particular were so annoyed by the incident is that it killed off any hope of them bagging an unlikely equaliser on Merseyside.

Considering Liverpool amassed 21 shots compared to Arsenal's four, you'd be forgiven for thinking that was wholly unrealistic, but try telling that to Lacazette.

The Frenchman looked absolutely gutted on the Arsenal bench after missing a glorious chance to make it 2-2 in the second-half, seeing his one-on-one effort blocked by Alisson Becker.

Funny clip of Craig Pawson

However, fear not Arsenal fans; it seems as though you weren't the only ones pulling their hair out when Lacazette bungled his big moment because referee Craig Pawson also looked gutted.

Honestly, we aren't kidding. An amusing clip emerged on Twitter which shows Pawson hanging his head back, seemingly stomping and saying something aloud in what looks to be frustration.

Check out the brilliant clip down below:

Ah, shades of Mike Dean running away in celebration after Mousa Dembele's goal for Tottenham against Aston Villa in 2015.

Look, I think we can all agree that Pawson isn't a closest Arsenal fan or that he'd triple-captained Lacazette only to see his Fantasy Premier League points disappear in front of his eyes.

Pawson actually supports the Blades

That being said, the footage is pretty conclusive that Pawson is gutted about something and it remains to be seen what that reason was, as much as we're sure it will have been professional.

Besides, according to the BBC, Pawson actually supports Sheffield United.

Therefore, as juicy as it might have been, Pawson wasn't joining the millions of Arsenal fans around the world wondering 'what might have been?' if Lacazette had kept his composure.
