Aston Villa submit seven-figure bid for defender

Aston Villa's summer of spending looks as though it's paying off.

Well, that's certainly what the early weeks of the season are suggesting.

Dean Smith's men are unbeaten so far this term and in competitive action, have only conceded once in four matches.

It's a far cry from the team that looked so abject for the majority of the 2019/20 campaign.

Ollie Watkins is yet to score in the league but did find the back of the net in the Carabao Cup - as did fellow new signing Bertrand Traore.

As for Emi Martinez, he's already saved a penalty and kept two clean sheets in his two league starts.

This has been the perfect start to the new campaign for the Villans, and they're not intent on letting up.

That's because sporting director Johan Lange is still in the market to sign some new players.

According to Danish publication, Ekstrabladet, Aston Villa have submitted a seven-figure bid of £9m to sign central defender Victor Nelsson.

The 21-year-old currently plays for FC Copenhagen and is now becoming 'one of the hottest names in the Premier League' ahead of the window closing.

Several English clubs have registered their interest in Nelsson but it's thought that Villa are now at the front of the queue to sign the young centre-back.

Copenhagen cannot ignore the money that Villa have thrown at Nelsson and see no option but to cash in.

With Coronavirus hitting the Danish club hard, receiving a fee like that would do wonders for their finances.

Aston Villa have a plethora of options at the heart of their defence but with the club keen to sell Bjorn Engels, Nelsson would be an ideal replacement.

Standing at 6 foot 1, the Dane is a force to be reckoned with, especially in the air.

Last season, he played 16 times in European competitions and won 5.4 aerial duels per match in the Europa League. That's a remarkable record for a player who also knows how to perform well when the ball is on the deck.

Nelsson completed over 80% of his passes last term, while still managing a colossal 6.1 clearances a game.

He is a no-nonsense defender that also knows how to perform the modern qualities a defender requires well.

The youngster may not be a goal threat from set plays but that shouldn't concern the Villans. After all, Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa have both already scored this season.

It's impressive to think that Aston Villa's sturdy defence could get better though. Nelsson is clearly a powerful defender and thus, should have no trouble adapting to Premier League life.
