Manchester United fans were hoping for a big summer transfer window.

Even before the window opened, they were linked with a sensational move for Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho.

Less than a week before the window slams shut, they’re still chasing the signature of Sancho. However, it looks as though they’re going to run out of time to get that deal done.

It was no secret that United needed to strengthen to reduce the 33-point gap between them and champions Liverpool last season.

However, they only have £40 million Donny van de Beek to show for their efforts.

Considering the performances in their two opening matches of the Premier League season - a 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace and a hugely fortunate 3-2 win against Brighton - don’t be surprised to see plenty of activity at Old Trafford before the transfer window closes.

Sancho may not be arriving but it seems they’re closing in on a deal to sign left-back Alex Telles from Porto.

But United need more.

And it seems Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants himself an out-and-out striker.

So, who is he looking to?

The experienced Edinson Cavani and Real Madrid flop Luka Jovic, if Gianluca Di Marzio is to be believed.

On Tuesday afternoon, he revealed that United were in talks with both the 33-year-old free agent and the Real Madrid striker over a possible loan deal.

Di Marzio wrote: "Contacts in progress with Edinson Cavani, released from Paris Saint Germain and very close to Benfica in recent weeks. Also asked Jovic from Real Madrid. The management of the English club will try to sign one of the two players in the last week of negotiations."

Jovic signed for Real Madrid from Frankfurt for a reported €60 million in 2019, on a six-year contract. However, the Serb managed just two goals in 27 appearances last season and could be deemed surplus to requirements by Zinedine Zidane this season.

As for Cavani, the 33-year-old was released by Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season after scoring 200 goals in 301 appearances for the French club.

Are either of them the answer the Man Utd’s problems right now? Probably not.

But United fans will just be excited at a potential new signing at this stage. They only have a few days remaining to strike a deal, though...
