There’s no doubt about it, Frank Lampard is under pressure this season.After spending the best part of £220 million this summer, Lampard is expected to deliver trophies during 2020/21.Bottom of the list of priorities is no doubt the Carabao Cup but when you’re drawn against Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham in the fourth round, you have to take it seriously.And Lampard did that by naming a strong XI to face Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.New goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was handed his debut. So too was Ben Chilwell. While summer signing Timo Werner lined up with Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi behind Olivier Giroud.And it was Werner who gave the visitors the lead after 19 minutes with a terrific strike on the edge of the box.
Minutes later, the two managers were seen in a heated confrontation.
It was apprentice vs master as Lampard took on his former manager, Mourinho.
Of course, Lampard has already got the better of Mourinho on three occasions and was looking to make it four.
And it seems Mourinho isn’t happy too happy about it.
During a lengthy argument on the touchline, the Spurs manager accused Lampard of being too ‘gobby’ with his side winning, saying: “F***ing hell Frank, when you're losing 3-0 you're not standing up here.”
Brilliant.
Of course, this isn’t the first high-profile manager Lampard has been embroiled in an argument with on the touchline.
Towards the end of last season, Lampard took on Jurgen Klopp when his Liverpool side were beating Chelsea ahead of lifting the Premier League trophy.
He felt that Liverpool were being arrogant saying after the match: "Some of the bench, it’s a fine line between when you’re winning – and they’ve won the league, fair play to Liverpool football club.
"But also don’t get too arrogant with it. That was my thing. But done. That’s it. It matters when you get emotional and that was it."
He might seem like a nice guy but Lampard has a bit of fire on the touchline…
