Tottenham’s schedule is pretty crazy.On Sunday, they hosted Newcastle in the Premier League and were denied three points by an incredibly harsh VAR penalty decision in injury-time.Forty-eight hours later, they had to face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, while 48 hours after that, they play Maccabi Haifa in the Europa League.It’s no wonder that Mourinho had to make a few changes for the cup clash against Chelsea. However, it was probably a stronger side than Mourinho hinted at before the game.And it was strong enough to beat Frank Lampard’s Chelsea on penalties after a 1-1 draw.Timo Werner had put the away side 1-0 ahead in a first-half which featured a heated touchline argument between Mourinho and Lampard.
But in the second half, Mourinho was involved in an even bigger talking point.
With 15 minutes remaining, Dier was seen sprinting down the tunnel. Spurs had already made all three substitutions and Mourinho was clearly fuming and he turned and followed him down the tunnel.
A few minutes later, Dier ran back onto the pitch as Mourinho followed him out.
What on earth was going on?
Well, you don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out exactly what had happened.
And after the match, Mourinho and Dier both confirmed that nature had called.
"It is not human to do what Eric Dier did!" Mourinho said.
"He had to go. He had to go. Maybe it’s a normal thing when you’re completely dehydrated. I knew he had to go, but I was just trying to put some pressure on him to have him back for the remaining time."
Imagine trying to go to the toilet and having Mourinho banging on your cubicle door. Well, unfortunately for Dier, he didn’t have to imagine it because it actually happened.
"Yeah, he wasn't happy but there was nothing I can do. Nature was calling,” Dier said.
Brilliant.
Just minutes after returning onto the pitch, Dier played a superb ball out to Sergio Regulation who produced an assist for Eric Lamela to take the tie into a penalty shootout.
Dier stepped up first - he probably wanted to get it over and done with - and scored as Spurs went on to win the shootout thanks to Mason Mount’s miss.
Dier immediately consoled Mount - let’s hope he washed those hands!
After the match, Dier saw the funny side and uploaded a brilliant Instagram of his Man of the Match award on the toilet seat with toilet roll everywhere captioned 'The real MOM'. The real Man of the Match was, indeed, the toilet roll.
Superb performance all around from Dier.
Mourinho also dedicated an Instagram post to Dier by writing: "Proud of all my players but this one led by example. 180 minutes in 48 hours @ericdier15."
