Tottenham Hotspur are facing a make or break few days in the transfer market.

Last season saw the north London side fall short of expectations by finishing the season in sixth place.

Jose Mourinho inherited a pretty fractured first team squad and so the task that he faced was near-impossible.

But this season there will be no excuses.

Mourinho has been tasked with securing Champions League football for the club while also pushing to win a major trophy.

Having been backed in the transfer market by Daniel Levy, it seems like there will be no room for excuses.

Levy has funded deals for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart and Matt Doherty, while also negotiating the deals that brought Sergio Reguilon and Gareth Bale from Real Madrid.

These signings are a real signal of intent for Spurs, but we all know that they aren't finished yet.

It's claimed that Mourinho is looking to sign a central defender to solidify his team, while a striker is also on the wishlist.

Signing a frontman is easier said than done, however, with Harry Kane holding the starting jersey almost by default.

Tottenham have been linked with plenty of strikers so far this summer, but have failed to make any sort of breakthrough.

However it seems that the club's latest target could be up for a move.

Reports from Football Insider have claimed that Christian Benteke is 'jumping at the opportunity' to move to Spurs.

Earlier this week it was claimed that the Crystal Palace striker was being targeted for a surprise move to north London as their striker search continues.

Interest in Benteke is something of a surprise given his record of scoring just six goals in the last two seasons.

But with Spurs looking for a cut-price option to work as understudy to Kane, it could be a move that comes off with the Belgian international 'keen to reignite' his career.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This would surely go down as one of the worst signings of the summer transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur have been looking for a striker for months and months, meaning that they've been linked with many, many names.

If they settle on Christian Benteke I can't imagine that supporters will be happy.

Roy Hodgson described him as someone with 'the ability the score goals', however that's not something he's showcased in the last couple of years.

The fact that Crystal Palace would probably be happy to let him go should probably tell you what you need to know.

A move would undoubtedly be a cheap option, but I would not be surprised if supporters voiced their displeasure at this if a move was to materialise.

After all, Benteke is probably not the man who will help Spurs back into the Champions League this season.
