Two words immediately spring to mind when thinking of Jose Mourinho: Box Office.The Portuguese coach, who is widely regarded as one of the best managers in history, has been involved in countless controversial incidents over the course of his illustrious career.Whether intentional or not, Mourinho always manages to make headlines.On Tuesday, the 57-year-old clashed with Frank Lampard, his former player, on the touchline during the EFL Cup Round of 16 tie between Tottenham and Chelsea.Mourinho made further headlines by following midfielder Eric Dier to the toilets during the second half.
As these two incidents are fresh in the mind, we thought we’d look back at Mourinho’s maddest/funniest touchline moments from years gone by.His famous run down the Old Trafford touchline (2004)We have to begin with this classic.Mourinho announced himself to the world by masterminding FC Porto’s Champions League win back in 2004.And his most famous moment came in the Round of 16 away at Old Trafford when he sprinted down the touchline after Costinha’s late goal knocked out Manchester United in their own back yard.
Shushing Liverpool fans in the Carling Cup final (2005)
Another classic Mourinho moment.
After Steven Gerrard’s own goal levelled the scores in the 2005 League Cup final, Mourinho couldn’t resist shushing Liverpool’s fans inside the Millennium Stadium.
Chelsea went on to win the game thanks to Mateja Kezman’s winner in extra-time.
Making handcuffs sign at the San Siro (2010)
Mourinho was suspended for three games and fined €40,000 for repeatedly crossing and raising his arms to fans and TV cameras, mimicking being handcuffed, after two of his Inter Milan players were sent off against Sampdoria.
“Well done, well done... remember your family is watching you on TV,” Mourinho reportedly told the match officials.
Poking Tito Vilanova in the eye (2011)
Mourinho’s most shameful touchline incident.
Managing Real Madrid at the time, the Portuguese coach gouged Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova’s eye during a Clasico at Camp Nou following a poor challenge by Marcelo on Cesc Fabregas.
Clash with Jonas Olsson (2013)
Following a 2-2 draw with West Brom, Mourinho called defender Jonas Olsson a “Mickey Mouse player”.
How did Olsson reply? Reportedly with a blunt “F*** off”, which seems fair enough.
Warning Crystal Palace ball-boy (2014)
Mourinho used to be a ball-boy - and a very good one at that, by his own admission - but he had words with one young lad at Selhurst Park in March 2014.
When the Crystal Palace ball-boy dallied in handing the ball back to Cesar Azpilicueta for a throw-in, Mourinho told the youngster: “You do this, one day somebody punches you.”
Bit harsh.
Bust-up with Arsene Wenger (2014)
Mourinho and Wenger get on quite well these days, but they used to hate each other.
It all boiled over between the two legendary Premier League managers in October 2014. Wenger - so cool, calm and collected off the pitch - shoved the then Chelsea boss.
Losing it with Chelsea’s medical staff (2015)
Another shameful touchline incident.
Mourinho was furious when two of Chelsea’s medical staff, including team doctor Eva Carneiro, ran onto the pitch to treat Eden Hazard without his consent.
Carneiro left Chelsea soon after and took both the manager and club to court, eventually reaching a discrimination settlement against Mourinho.
Shushing the camera after beating Tottenham (2017)
A new meme was born in October 2017 when Mourinho produced a ‘shush’ gesture at a Sky Sports camera following a 1-0 victory over Tottenham during his time as Man Utd boss.
"Some people speak too much; calm down, relax a little bit," he said after the match.
"Don't speak too much; speak, speak, speak. Relax. Relax a little bit, don't be so nervous. Don't be so excited.
"No [it was not directed at the opposition bench]. They did their job - super correct - and we have yet to arrive in a match where myself, Mauricio, my staff and his staff have a problem.”
Angering Mark Huges (2017)
Never refuse to shake Mark Hughes’s hand. Nothing makes the Welsh coach angrier.
Mourinho did just that following a 2-2 draw with Stoke City in 2017 because he believed Hughes told him to “f*** off” during the game.
Furiously chasing Chelsea’s Marco Ianni (2018)
Marco Ianni goaded Mourinho after Chelsea’s late equaliser against Man Utd in October 2018.
Mourinho reacted by sprinting after the Chelsea coach, who was fined £6,000 by the Football Association after admitting an improper conduct charge.
Before holding three fingers up at Chelsea’s fans (2018)
Mourinho was also goaded by the Chelsea fans who once adored him and reacted by holding up three fingers - each finger representing one Premier League title he won for the Blues during his two spells at Stamford Bridge.
Heated discussion with Paul Pogba (2018)
Mourinho and Paul Pogba did not see eye to eye at Man Utd - particularly during their final months working together.
The pair were involved in a heated touchline discussion during a 2-0 defeat against Spurs at Wembley in 2018.
Throwing water bottles after a late Fellaini winner (2019)
One of Mourinho’s craziest touchline celebrations, Marouane Fellaini’s late winning goal against Young Boys in the Champions League made him lose his s***.
Funny reaction when told Sterling was on a yellow card (2020)

Mourinho walked off chuckling after Raheem Sterling went down inside Tottenham’s penalty area, only to realise the Manchester City forward was already on a yellow card.
He sprinted from his seat to the fourth official to question why Sterling wasn’t sent off.
