San Antonio Spurs assistant Becky Hammon is leading the way for female coaches in the NBA.

Now, the female basketball coach has spoken about her experiences of being a woman in a male-dominated league.

Hammon has played basketball at the highest level in Europe as well as the WNBA, playing for the San Antonio Stars from 2007 – 2014.

During an online program for Jr. NBA coaches, a Q&A gave junior coaches an opportunity to ask the Spurs assistant about her experiences.

One of the main questions asked during the program was around the possibility of a female head coach in the NBA – including her individual career.

Hammon said: “I have interviewed with the Indiana Pacers (this off-season) and I think as far as when we will actually see it – that’s really not up to me.

“But as many interviews as I can get, the better practice I get, and I do think it’s right around the corner.

“When you look around the world and you start to see women leaders in all spectrums of life…what is basketball that a woman can’t teach,” the Spurs assistant said.

Hammon is also confident in her ability, and rightly so, when describing her own chances.

“I’ve had 22 years in a professional basketball arena, so I’m equipped and I’ve been preparing for this for a long time.

“So as soon as the opportunity presents itself and it’s the right fit for the organisation and for myself, then I think you’ll see it.”

The six-time WNBA All-star was also called a “trailblazer” during the Q&A, referring to how she is leading the way for women in a male-dominated league.

Hammon replied: “Oh gosh, the word trailblazer. It’s a term I try not to think about honestly. I just try to do my best every day and hopefully that leads to more opportunities for more women."

The Spurs assistant also recognised that the change will affect everyone, saying: “Obviously there’s some things that you have to work through and I think you need a lot of grace and humility through the process because this is new for the guys too.”

However, Hammon is assured that this movement shouldn’t change the sport, stating: “People have to get comfortable with it, people have to get used to seeing it, it can’t be abnormal to see a woman out there so I’m trying to normalise it as much as possible so that you’re not surprised.

“It’s what we do and game recognises game and the players respond to my knowledge and my input and ultimately that’s the goal,” Hammon concluded.
