West Ham United go into their clash with Leicester tomorrow afternoon full of confidence.

That's not a phrase we're used to hearing when it comes to the Irons, but lo and behold, they stuck four unanswered goals past Wolves last week.

It was undoubtedly the best performance of David Moyes' second reign, but what's crucial, is that they now don't rest on their laurels.

West Ham had only acquired Tomas Soucek on a permanent basis ahead of that game, but they have at least done one piece of business this week.

That was a deal to sign Czech right-back Vladimír Coufal.

After finishing 16th last term, they desperately needed to improve their squad. Unfortunately, David Gold and David Sullivan haven't done too much.

With the transfer window slamming shut on Monday, they are now running out of time to sufficiently bolster their squad.

David Moyes and Steve Bruce

Despite keeping a clean sheet last week, one area they're looking to strengthen is at the back.

Unfortunately, West Ham have pulled out of the race to sign James Tarkowski after being put off by his asking price.

However, the Hammers have a cheaper alternative in mind.

According to The Daily Mail, West Ham have turned their attentions to landing Watford centre-back Craig Dawson.

Moyes reportedly sees the 30-year-old as a defender who ticks a lot of boxes and they may not have to pay much to prise him away from the Hornets.

That's because Transfermarkt value the central defender at just £4.3m.

Craig Dawson and Troy Deeney

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Tarkowski would have been an excellent signing for West Ham. He's in his prime at the age of 27 and he's also been capped by England.

That being said, Moyes is right to think that Dawson ticks boxes.

A capable and consistent defender, he would offer a great deal of support to a defence that had one of the worst records in the Premier League last season.

Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna looked like accidents waiting to happen in 2019/20, so at this point in time, it's a case of anyone will do.

Craig Dawson

The major positive about Dawson is his Premier League experience. He has featured 182 times in the top-flight, while his 41 career goals dictate that he's a considerable threat from set-plays.

He is a beast in the air and won a colossal 3.5 aerial duels for Watford last season. Coincidentally, that's a tally that usurped both Diop and Ogbonna.

It's clear to see he'd be an undoubted upgrade in that area of the pitch.
