Leeds set to intensify their efforts to sign Premier League winger

Demarai Gray vs Brighton

Leeds' game against Manchester City this weekend was met with great expecations.

It pitted one of the most successful in the game, Pep Guardiola, against one of the most fascinating head coaches in the world, Marcelo Bielsa.

The Argentine is someone Guardiola has enormous respect for, and it was always going to be an intriguing clash.

Leeds have worked relentlessly this season and currently lead the way in terms of successful presses in the division.

It was never going to be easy for City, especially after seeing their title rivals Liverpool ship three goals to Bielsa's men on the opening day of the season.

Irrespective of the result that occurred, Victor Orta knew he was going to have to conjure up one or two last big efforts in the transfer market.

The window closes on Monday and after seeing a deal for Michael Cuisance fall apart, they need added bodies.

One area to strengthen is out on the flanks. Daniel James and Ryan Kent have both been linked in recent days and weeks, but another name on Leeds' shortlist is Demarai Gray.

The Whites were touted with a switch a number of days ago but there has now been an update on their pursuit of the Leicester winger.

According to The Telegraph, they are now set to intensify their efforts to sign Gray and are stepping up their pursuit of the 24-year-old.

This comes just days after it was revealed that Leicester were open to selling the player, predominantly because he only has a year left on his deal with the Foxes.

It's previously been claimed that Gray could cost £20m, but Leeds will have to fight off competition from Tottenham for his signature.

It would appear as though Leeds have two primary options before the window closes, Gray and James.

However, who would be the better option? Both have sensational pace and they both know how to beat a player.

Described as a "wonderful talent" by Brendan Rodgers, Gray is clearly the more experienced option, boasting 132 top-flight appearances to his name.

The stats also suggest that Gray is the better footballer. He may have started more than James later term, but the graph above shows that the Leicester winger is better at dribbling, passing and creating goal-scoring opportunities.

Not only that, but he progresses more positively with the ball and plays more balls into the penalty area.

Daniel James

James is dispossessed on fewer occasions and they both press to a similar degree, but at the moment, Gray might be the better signing.

That isn't to say that James' stats won't improve considerably in the future, though.
