Manchester United have been absolutely humiliated in a 6-1 annihilation against Tottenham Hotspur.To say things started quickly would be like remarking that grass is green or the sky is blue because there was no less than three goals during the opening seven minutes at Old Trafford.It was United who made the better start, though, earning themselves a penalty before a single minute had elapsed with Anthony Martial being clumsily fouled by Davinson Sanchez.
Crazy first seven minutes
To the shock of absolutely nobody, Bruno Fernandes held his nerve from the penalty spot, fooling Hugo Lloris with his 'hop' technique for his 10th spot kick conversion in just 26 matches.
However, there was little for United to cheer about after that in the first-half with Spurs proceeding to flip the game on its head with quick-fire goals from Tanguy Ndombele and Heung-min Son.
The first emerged when some dreadful defending from Harry Maguire saw United fail to clear the ball in their own penalty area, leaving Ndombele with the simple task of scoring from close range.
Tottenham's incredible first-half
The second, however, was more to do with individual brilliance as Son picked up from he left off with his four goals against Southampton by finishing deftly past David de Gea.
But the wheels truly started to fall off when United were reduced to ten men with Martial receiving his marching orders for violent conduct, albeit pretty petty, off the ball on Erik Lamela.
It backfired almost immediately for the Red Devils, too; conceding possession sloppily on the edge of their own penalty area and allowing Harry Kane to round off a quick exchange for 3-1.
Astonishingly, the first-half massacre wasn't finished there as Son continued his hot goal-scoring streak, nipping in at the near post with a fine finish from Serge Aurier's cross.
Spurs make it 5-1 after the break
And by the time both teams emerged from the interval, which was about as much of a rest United got all game, Aurier decided it was only fair that he bagged a goal of his own for good measure.
The Ivorian full-back clinically screwed his effort into the bottom corner having latched on to yet another fine build-up phase from Spurs, while also catching out Paul Pogba with his run.
Further humiliation for Man Utd
But Pogba wasn't out of the woods after that because he proceeded to facilitate Tottenham's sixth as well, conceding a penalty that gave Kane the chance to put the visitors 6-1 up.
However, true to Tottenham's ruthlessness on the day, Kane absolutely thrashed his penalty into the top corner, giving De Gea absolutely no chance despite correctly picking the right side.
So, 6-1. Yes, 6-1. That means that Tottenham have equalled United's unsavoury stat for their worst ever Premier League home defeat, which came against Manchester City nine years ago.
However, you get the feeling that this 6-1 defeat is even more painful than the first for no better reason than exposing the yawning cracks both on and off the pitch at Old Trafford. Sheesh.
