Manchester United were hung up to dry during their 6-1 humiliation against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon. It was a dreadful result at Old Trafford that will be talked about for years and decades to come, compounding what has already been a tumultuous start to the season for the Red Devils.United had opened the campaign with a 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace, were lucky to rescue a late winner at Brighton and have also shown frailties with a lack of activity in the transfer window.

Man Utd 1-6 Tottenham

But nobody could have predicted the lowest of lows coming in the form of an annihilation against Spurs that can only be matched Manchester City's famous win by the same scoreline in 2011.

Bruno Fernandes had actually fired the Red Devils into a one-minute lead from the penalty spot, only to see himself and the rest of the United squad 4-1 down by half-time.

Son Heung-min continued his impeccable form with a brace, while Tanguy Ndombele profited from a dreadful harry Maguire error to score and Harry Kane also found the net.

Mourinho at his best vs Man Utd

Serge Aurier extended the advantage to 5-1 in the second-half, before a Kane penalty rounded off the scoring and that's all without mentioning Anthony Martial's controversial red card.

But what makes the thrashing all the more painful for United fans is the fact it came against their last manager, Jose Mourinho, who no doubt will have been delighted with Spurs' masterclass.

In fact, the 'Special One' appeared to be in the form of his life with both his behaviour at full-time and when the interviews started tumbling in.

Mourinho patting Solskjaer on the head

Mourinho went viral at the final whistle with many fans thinking that he was being a 's***house' by way of patting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the head when they went to exchange handshakes.

You've got to admit, the facial expression that Mourinho makes towards the camera suggests the cheeky tap of the scalp wasn't entirely innocent - check it out:

It's no wonder then that the world press were keen to get his thoughts on what must go down as Tottenham's greatest performance of his reign - and boy did Mourinho perform for the cameras.

First and foremost, when asked about the red card incident, Mourinho gave the belting one-liner: "If somebody cannot cry about VAR it is Manchester United for sure."

Mourinho silencing the haters

And Mourinho being Mourinho, he couldn't resist firing shots at the haters, joking that if Tottenham had a more attacking coach that they could have scored more than 10 goals at Old Trafford.

In fact, Mourinho even told beINSPORT that he overheard Solskjaer revealing his formation plans for the second-half and duly instructed his Spurs team on how to expose it.

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

My relationship with Mourinho would make for a cracking romance novel.

I'll tell you the truth, I wasn't feeling the love anymore when he started acting like a grumpy old man near the end of his Chelsea return and basically his entire spell with United.

But call it a last ditch attempt to keep me around or not, but Mourinho really won me over again with the way he came across in the 'All or Nothing' Amazon documentary.

So imagine my surprise - yeh, none - when Mourinho was on his best form just a few minutes after dishing out a managerial masterclass against the most recent team to have sacked him.

It's so great to see Mourinho showing the sort of wry smiles and charisma that he did during his early days at Chelsea as well as his time with Inter Milan, so, yes, the romance is alive and kicking.
