Long-term Liverpool target Ezequiel Lavezzi will not be leaving Napoli this summer according to talkSPORT.

The 25-year-old Serie A star has been heavily coveted by a number of Europe's elite clubs, after turning in a series of scintillating performances for the Italian side this season.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is said to have made Lavezzi his number one target when the transfer window reopens in June, but a move to Anfield now looks to be off after the player's agent quashed any hope of a summer deal being reached.

Napoli have performed above expectation this season, currently sitting in third place in Serie A, just one win from Champions League qualification.

The club's upturn in form can in part be attributed to Lavezzi, who is nicknamed 'El Pocho' or, 'the Chubby One' due to being overweight in the early stages of his career.

His ability however, was never in doubt, with reports in the Argentinian media dubbing Lavezzi the 'new Maradona'. He played down those comparisons and instead likened himself in playing style to Carlos Tevez.

After a brief setback, the talismanic star has rediscovered the potential he always had, to help fire Napoli to within touching distance of Europe’s elite competition.

Lavezzi's agent Alejandro Mazzoni told Italian radio station Kiss Radio,"Lavezzi wants to play in the Champions League with Napoli - his intention is to play against Barcelona and Lionel Messi.

"I have not received any calls from any club, but if I were to, there would be nothing to negotiate."

The news will likely be met with dismay by Liverpool fans who were hoping to secure yet another marquee signing at Anfield this summer.

As Reds owners Fenway Sports Group look set to continue spending in a bid to improve the Liverpool playing squad, Dalglish will no doubt have alternative target's in mind as he goes about returning the Anfield club to its former glories.
