The Premier League served up some of the craziest games in its 28-year history last weekend.

Football fans around the world collectively took a double-take when they saw that Manchester United and Liverpool conceded six and seven goals respectively in the space of a few hours.

You couldn't write it. First up, the Red Devils plunged themselves further into crisis as Tottenham Hotspur humiliated them at a Old Trafford for their joint worst defeat in the competition.

Man Utd and Liverpool defeats

As for reigning champions Liverpool, they shipped seven goals for the first time since 1963, inexplicably losing to an Aston Villa team that dodged relegation just two months ago.

Plenty of seasons go by without these sort of bonkers results taking place, so for two of them to transpire in the same afternoon shows that 2020/21 could be absolute chaos.

But don't think for one minute that the unforeseen circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic mean that United and Liverpool should fully escape their embarrassment.

Most humiliating Premier League defeats

Besides, here at GIVEMESPORT, we wanted to assess just how terrible the respective results were by comparing them with the most humiliating defeats in the history of the Premier League.

Naturally, that's a subjective measure, so apologies if your favourite thrashing hasn't made the cut, but we think we've placed United's 6-1 loss and Liverpool's 7-2 defeat pretty fairly here.

So, without further ado, take a journey though the 15 craziest, harshest and most brutal drubbings that have ever been dished out in the Premier League down below:

15. Southampton 8-0 Sunderland (2014/15)

Ah yes, the thrashing so embarrassing for Sunderland that they refunded the fans who made the 300-mile trip and who could forget Santiago Vergini's iconic own goal on the volley?

14. Manchester City 8-0 Watford (2019/20)

What makes this annihilation particularly amusing is that City not only took the lead within the very first minute, but found themselves on course for 25 goals after scoring five in the opening 18 minutes.

13. Newcastle United 5-1 Tottenham Hotspur (2015/16)

By no means the widest scoreline on the list, but Spurs were well and truly humiliated when Arsenal overtook them on the final day of the season after being absolutely trounced by an already-relegated team.

12. Manchester City 6-0 Chelsea (2018/19)

Again, fast starts are the key point for City here because fans were in a state of shock when they led Maurizio Sarri's men by four goals after just 25 minutes with Sergio Aguero eventually rounding off a hat-trick.

11. Tottenham Hotspur 9-1 Wigan Athletic (2009/10)

As soon as you score nine goals, you're an absolute shoo-in for the list and the crazy thing is that Tottenham only led 1-0 at half-time, only for Jermain Defoe to let loose and score five goals.

10. Nottingham Forest 1-8 Manchester United (1998/99)

Shipping EIGHT goals at home is always a recipe for humiliation, but what compiled the misery for Forest was the fact Ole Gunnar Solskjaer helped himself to four of them despite being a substitute.

9. Manchester United 9-0 Ipswich Town (1994/95)

For a long time, this stood clear as the heaviest defeat in Premier League history and marked the first five-goal haul from a single player thanks to Andy Cole's heroics, so of course it earns a place in the top ten.

8. Chelsea 6-0 Arsenal (2013/14)

What could possibly go wrong for Arsene Wenger's 1,000 game as Arsenal boss? Well, going 3-0 down within 17 minutes, having a player mistakenly sent off and watching your title chances crash and burn is up there.

7. Middlesbrough 8-1 Manchester City (2007/08)

Whenever we need reminding just how far City have come since the injection of cash from Sheikh Mansour, we can look no further than the time they were obliterated on the final day of the 2007/08 campaign.

6. Southampton 0-9 Leicester City (2019/20)

An identical scoreline to United vs Ipswich, but we think Leicester have the edge by way of almost hitting double figures against Southampton in front of their own fans. That, and the fact TWO players bagged a hat-trick.

5. Manchester United 1-6 Tottenham Hotspur (2020/21)

Ah yes, one of the results that inspired this article. A top-five spot is certainly warranted considering United sacked Jose Mourinho just two years ago, only for him to inflict a record-equalling defeat upon them.

4. Stoke City 6-1 Liverpool (2014/15)

We're really in the territory of score-lines that blew our minds and few things are more humiliating than Steven Gerrard's final Liverpool game being defecated upon by falling 5-0 down to Stoke at half-time.

3. Manchester United 8-2 Arsenal (2011/12)

We all remember where we were when this cobbled-together Arsenal team was handed the biggest reality check of all time at Old Trafford, shipping eight goals as Wayne Rooney bagged a set-piece hat-trick.

2. Manchester United 1-6 Manchester City (2011/12)

It's mental to think that what happened to United last weekend also transpired when Sir Alex Ferguson was in the hot-seat and against their 'noisy neighbours' to boot... yeh, truly humiliating.

1. Aston Villa 7-2 Liverpool (2020/21)

But Fergie can breathe a massive sigh of relief because the weekend's activities mean that there's a new most humiliating result on the throne, so congratulations(?) to Liverpool for taking the prize.

It doesn't get much more embarrassing than defending your Premier League title by way of a defensive catastrophe at the home of a team who finished in the Championship play-offs just last year.

Liverpool: Most humiliating loss

That's right, in this writer's humble opinion, the thrashing that Liverpool received on Sunday night is the most humiliating we have ever seen in the Premier League.

It has to be. We're talking about a team that romped to the title with 99 points just a few weeks ago, so for them to lost to a club fresh from fighting for relegation is poor at the best of times.

But for them to be absolutely slaughtered 7-2 is something else entirely and regardless of whether Jurgen Klopp's men can bounce back, they should forever be ashamed of this nightmare result.

That being said, as this list proves, the Premier League is such a beautifully entertaining beast that shock results can happen to the best of teams and it seems that even Liverpool aren't immune.

Now is the time for them to lick their wounds, but it will always leave a scar.
