Aston Villa 7-2 Liverpool.Yes, it really did happen.Last season, there were 64 points separating the two clubs but, on Saturday evening, there was an almighty chasm between them as Dean Smith’s side ran riot.The champions were without Alisson, Thiago and Sadio Mane but there’s simply no excuse for their capitulation.Ollie Watkins bagged a first-half hat-trick as Villa led 4-1 after 45 minutes.And after setting up the first two goals, Jack Grealish had a fun second half with two goals and another assist.
While Liverpool supporters would have been sitting at home in disbelief, you couldn’t blame rival fans for revelling in it.After all, this is a Liverpool side who has lost just four times in the previous two campaigns - and two of those defeats occurred after they had already wrapped up the Premier League title.Social media was full of fans pointing and laughing at Jurgen Klopp’s side. Who could blame them?
But it wasn’t just fans who were laughing that Liverpool being hammered.That’s because Everton star Richarlison cheekily got in on the act.Minutes after the final whistle, the Brazilian posted an image of the back of his shirt. This shirt number for Everton? Of course, No.7. He accompanied it with a fire emoji.
Coincidence? We think not.
Richarlison’s Everton are sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League after four wins out of four so far.
Their next fixture? The Merseyside derby following the International break. That just got even tastier, didn’t it?
It’s not the first time Richarlison has taken shots at Liverpool eithr.
Ahead of last season’s Merseyside derby, he decided to question the ability of defender Virgil van Dijk
“People talk a lot about him, yes he is a great defender but I’ve already dribbled past him,” Richarlson said back in July.
“He was chosen as one of the top three in the world as he had an excellent season. But yes, for me there are better defenders.”
He might have a point after Saturday’s performance…
