It's been a torrid summer for Manchester United.

After guiding the club to a third place finish in the Premier League last term, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had high hopes of leading the club into a genuine title race this time around.

Unfortunately that seems unlikely at best.

Three points from three games has seen the Red Devils scrambling around the bottom half of the table as the season begins to warm up.

Of course there's plenty of time to put things right, but not in the transfer market.

Time is ticking with the domestic window closing on October 16 - meaning that United don't have long to put the finishing touches to their side.

One position that the club have been targeting all summer is a winger with various names being linked with a move.

Jadon Sancho has been the top target with United heavily linked with a move for the Borussia Dortmund star.

However that link quickly paled into insignificance.

But with United still looking for a winger it seems that they're looking to step up their search.

Ismaila Sarr is a player who United have been linked with recently, and it seems that the club have suffered a setback in their pursuit.

The Manchester Evening News have claimed that Solskjaer's side submitted a loan offer for the Watford star which included an option to buy.

However this move has been turned down by the Championship side.

It's claimed that Watford value the player at around £45million and will only entertain permanent offers for the 22-year-old.

With the domestic window remaining open for another week-and-a-half, it's likely that United will come back with another offer before that deadline on October 16.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This would be a very interesting signing if it came to fruition.

Ismaila Sarr is undoubtedly a top talent and it's not a surprise to see that Manchester United are interested.

The only dilemma is where he will fit into things at Old Trafford.

Valued at £22.05m, United will have to pay double that to get a deal done - a significant outlay for a player with just one mixed Premier League campaign to his name.

Nigel Pearson described him as 'a real match-winner', and that's something which will no doubt appeal to the Red Devils.

That said, with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford all capable of playing on the wings, he could face a big battle to get into the side.
