West Ham have had more outs than ins this summer.

The Hammers endured a busy transfer window, moving on no fewer than eight players.

Grady Diangana made a switch to West Bromwich Albion, Albian Ajeti moved to Celtic, Jordan Hugill and Josh Cullen moved to Norwich City and Anderlecht respectively, while Roberto has moved to Real Valladolid on a free transfer. Pablo Zabaleta, Carlos Sanchez, and Jack Wilshere have all been released.

There is the possibility that Felipe Anderson could leave, too, with FC Porto interested in snaffling him away from the London Stadium.

Only Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal have come into the club, but there could have been another acquisition on transfer deadline day.

There were various reports that the Hammers were interested in signing Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori but it appears that a deal collapsed at the eleventh hour.

The Blues, per Sky Sports, were willing to move Tomori on and the two clubs agreed a loan fee, but the defender decided, 10 minutes before the transfer deadline, that he wanted to stay in west London.

The Hammers have been looking to sign a centre-back all summer but have been unable to do a deal, with Tomori simply the latest disappointment.

The likes of James Tarkowski, Nikola Milenkovic, and Duje Caleta-Car were also targets but fees could either not be agreed or the players were not keen on the move.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

This is not the best look for West Ham.

They clearly put in a hefty amount of energy trying to sign a defender in the summer transfer window and yet they haven’t even been able to get a simple loan over the line.

Tomori wanting to stay at Chelsea is one thing but this speaks to a wider issue with the allure of the club.

West Ham have failed to bring in the majority of their centre-back targets and their second signing is a friend and international team-mate of Soucek.

That’s a damning indictment; they simply don’t have the pull required to strengthen properly.
