Manchester United's summer transfer window was extremely disappointing.

Despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side finishing last campaign on a high, reinforcements were desperately needed if they wanted to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title.

However, United were only able to add Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles and a 33-year-old Edinson Cavani to their squad. To say that United fans expected more would be an understatement.

One player that United were said to be desperately trying to sign this summer was Jadon Sancho.

Ultimately, though, when the clock struck 11pm on October 5, he was not a United player.

But what exactly happened with United's pursuit of Sancho? A lot was said about the potential transfer with no one really knowing the truth.

Chris Williams, journalist for The International Sport Press Association, has taken to social media to outline exactly what happened between Sancho and United in a 13-tweet thread.

You can view it below...

Williams begins by outlining that United were told by Dortmund they had to pay €120m for Sancho and no less. Sancho was open to a move.

United believed Dortmund's stance was a negotiating tactic and that they would be able to get him for cheaper.

Sancho never agitated for a move and understood the situation between the two clubs.

United contacted Dortmund again in late September to see if the situation had changed. The German club responded by saying he was not for sale at any price.

Williams claims Dortmund were never going to sell Sancho after their deadline of August 10 passed.

Sancho is contracted until 2023, but Dortmund have said his price can only get higher.

So there we have it.

As Williams claims, United had to meet Dortmund's asking price by August 10. They chose not to do so, meaning there was no way that he was ever going to leave.

United may live to regret that decision.

Sancho, despite understanding the situation, is said to be 'bewildered' by Man United's transfer activity.

According to Sky Sports, Sancho was expecting to sign for the club and was waiting for them to stump up the money.

They never met Dortmund's valuation though, meaning he didn't get the move he desired.

It remains to be seen whether United will reignite their interest in the future.
