Manchester United have endured a torrid summer transfer window so far.

With rivals such as Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham taking proactive steps to strengthen their squads, the Red Devils were left floundering until the final hours of the international window.

Deals to bring in Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles, Facundo Pellistri and Edinson Cavani capped off the summer spending at Old Trafford.

However it's unlikely that this will be enough to please supporters.

Much of the summer was spent targeting higher calibre additions, with one player in particularly taking plenty of the headlines.

Of course we're talking about Jadon Sancho.

Valued at £105.3m by Transfermarkt, the Borussia Dortmund star has been United's 'top target' for as long as we can remember with a move for him this summer seen as a real priority.

But that pursuit never really got started.

With the German giants demanding a fee of around £108million to get a deal done, United took a somewhat stubborn approach to negotiations which saw Dortmund lose interest and express in early August that a deal would not be happening.

But as well as missing out on the player for now, it seems that the Red Devils could have cost themselves his signature in the future too.

The Independent have claimed that Liverpool may now be favourites to get a deal done.

While Jurgen Klopp's side didn't enter the race to sign him this summer, it's thought that they are big admirers of the England international and could be open to a move in the future.

Given Klopp's links to Dortmund, it could pave the way for the Premier League champions to make a move for him next summer.

After all, I'm sure that United's attempts at negotiations this summer won't have gone down that well with the German side.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Manchester United fans are furious at the lack of progress made by the club this summer.

The last-gasp nature of the bulk of their arrivals indicates a lack of planning which is worrying for many as they look to close the gap on the Premier League title race.

This transfer update certainly won't help.

I can only imagine how annoyed supporters would be if United ended up missing out on a deal for Sancho altogether.

With the signing firmly in their hands, it would be a massive blow to miss out on a deal for the Dortmund star to another club.

For that club to end up being Liverpool would be devastating.

Jurgen Klopp's side are certainly interested in a move and it'll be interesting to see if they come knocking for the England star next summer.
