Manchester United tipped to step up pursuit of 'real match-winner'

Manchester United are surely contenders for having the worst summer transfer window.

Despite months of preparation the Red Devils signed just one player going into the final 24 hours of the market being open.

That was Donny van de Beek who arrived from Ajax - a player who will slot into an already overpopulated central midfield area.

The final hours of the window saw United sign four new players in the shape of Alex Telles, Facundo Pellistri, Amad Diallo and Edinson Cavani.

While those signings will bolster Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad, there's questions over the quality of those coming in.

After finishing third in the Premier League last term the hope was that the club would sign players with the quality to help them close the gap on Liverpool and Manchester City.

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to have happened.

United spent plenty of time pursuing a big-money move for Jadon Sancho.

However this deal didn't come to fruition with Borussia Dortmund holding firm on their valuation for the England star.

Solskjaer also looked at a number of other right midfielders, one of whom could still be a target in the coming weeks.

According to the Daily Mirror, United could yet make a move for Ismaila Sarr.

The right winger could be available to move on after suffering relegation from the Premier League with Watford last term.

It's claimed that the Hornets are demanding a fee of around £40million to get a deal done, but with the domestic deadline running until Friday 16 October there's plenty of time for United to strike a deal with the Championship club.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This is a deal that would be very appealing for Manchester United fans.

Supporters had high hopes going into the transfer window with Jadon Sancho tipped as the club's primary transfer target.

However that move will not be happening.

As a result the Red Devils were forced to bring in a number of talented young players on deadline day.

While they may be stars of the future, it's unlikely that they'll come in and make the sort of immediate impact that fans will want.

Ismaila Sarr, however, could be the answer.

Described as 'a real match-winner' by former Watford boss Nigel Pearson, Sarr has experience of the top flight and would be seen as a valuable first team addition.

With just over a week left in the window it'll be interesting to see if United do make a move for the Watford star - and more importantly - whether it'll be the sort of deal that fans are happy with.
