Liverpool enjoyed a fine transfer window.

The Reds strengthened their squad in the summer, bringing in a world-class midfielder in Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich, and Diogo Jota from Wolves. Konstantinos Tsimikas also came in to strengthen the defensive ranks behind Andrew Robertson.

Of course, Jurgen Klopp’s men struggled at the weekend, losing by a staggering scoreline of 7-2 to Aston Villa, but the business has been effective.

However, departures have not really been the order of the day.

Rhian Brewster has gone to Sheffield United, while Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana have also left, for Zenit St Petersburg and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively. Loris Karius was loaned out and Nathaniel Clyne has left on a free transfer.

First-team players have largely stayed around, but Georginio Wijnaldum is one who has been linked away.

The Netherlands international has a contract that expires at the end of the season, and he has been reported as a potential target for Barcelona.

Because of his contractual situation, Wijnaldum can sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January, and the Dutchman is remaining coy on the potential of a move to Camp Nou.

Quoted by Sky Sports, he said of the Barca interest: “I don’t think it was that serious. Otherwise you would have read a bit more, or more would have happened.

“There was nothing precise. The way it looks now, I will stay in Liverpool.

“My contract is valid for another 10 months and that can change. You never know in football. We will see what happens.”

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Liverpool need to get Wijnaldum tied down.

The former Newcastle United man has been a key member of Jurgen Klopp’s squad, and has played in every Premier League game thus far this season.

The prospect of losing him on a free transfer, to another major European club, is something of a nightmare.

He is still just 29 and is valued at £36m by Transfermarkt.

The idea of him going for nothing has to be nipped in the bud as soon as possible.
