Leeds United enjoyed a heck of a summer.

After securing promotion from the Championship the Yorkshire side were tasked with preparing themselves for life in the top flight.

After 16 years away, it was always going to be a big ask to slot back in amongst the elite of English football.

But as it turns out Leeds have had little to worry about.

Two wins from their opening four games has seen Marcelo Bielsa's side settle into the top half of the table as we go into the international break.

With just a defeat against reigning champions Liverpool to their name, the hope is that a big season could be on the cards.

Of course plenty of credit has to go to Victor Orta.

The Spaniard and his recruitment team have worked tirelessly all summer to bring in a number of key additions including Robin Koch, Diego Llorente, Rodrigo and Raphinha.

But while the international transfer window is now shut, the focus now turns to making additions from the domestic market.

Leeds have been linked with various players from the EFL, including Todd Cantwell.

Despite suffering relegation last term the Norwich City star was impressive under Daniel Farke, leading to reports that the Whites might make a move for him.

But while that interest appears to be genuine, former Leeds forward Noel Whelan is of the belief that much of the contact was down to his agent's persistence, rather than the club's interest.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said: “From what I have heard, was it Cantwell’s agent that was pushing that one? That is what I’ve been hearing on the grapevine.

“Leeds might be interested in him, but they weren’t desperate for him.

“It’s more his agent pushing that one.

“If he did come to Leeds we’d be getting a very good young player and we know Marcelo Bielsa likes that. But it obviously wasn’t his first port of call. There were other irons in the fire that he was looking at.

“Raphinha, I’m sure he was looking at and monitoring for quite a while now.”

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Regardless of what Noel Whelan says, I think that a move for Todd Cantwell would be an excellent move for Leeds United.

Anyone who manages to score seven goals from midfield for a side who suffered relegation in such a miserable manner has to be given credit.

Valued at £18million by Transfermarkt, the 22-year-old has a very bright future ahead of him and that's something that Marcelo Bielsa will know.

If the Argentine can work with the player then there's every chance that he could be turned into a top Premier League player.

The only question is whether Leeds will still be interested in a deal after the late deal for Raphinha was announced.
