There's no doubt that Kurt Angle is one of the most iconic pro wrestlers of all time.

After winning an Olympic gold medal with a 'broken freakin' neck' in 1996, the American Hero debuted in WWE shortly after and quickly became one of the company's top heels.

But remember, being hated isn't exactly a bad thing in this business. Any crowd reaction is a good reaction and he had plenty of that throughout his career - both positive and negative.

Angle soon pushed on to become one of the most decorated icons in history, being recognised as a Grand Slam champion before being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2017.

While there were plenty of highs, there were plenty of lows too, with the wrestling legend suffering a string of injuries throughout his career.

Most notably, Angle was tormented by issues in 2006 and that ultimately led to his decision to ask for an early release from his contract.

Speaking recently on Broken Skull Sessions, the Hall of Famer opened up about how his body was breaking down in that period and how he even threatened to 'beat the s***' out of McMahon.

Angle threatened to beat up Vince

"The injuries, especially the neck, I was having knee, groin, back, hamstring. It was just something every week," he said.

"I was still travelling; I was still working. I started taking the pain killers and then, two wasn't working, went to four, went to eight, just kept getting higher and higher.

"And I got so out of control and then, I was able to pull it back right before that Mania [XIX] and my sister dies of a heroin overdose and that put me back on it.

Angle opened up about his issues with Steve Austin

"And then I ended up injuring my neck again and I told Vince. I was sending Vince text messages that I was going to beat the s*** out of him when I saw him.

"I mean, I was taking like 20 Percocets at night and a couple of Xanax and a Soma and I don't remember texting Vince."

After months of torment, Angle decided to take control of his situation and requested an early release from his contract - because he was worried he'd end up killing himself.

Angle struggled ahead of his release from WWE

"I decided to get out. I was calling Vince, texting him, and I told Vince, 'We need to talk' and he wouldn't get back to me," the WWE legend continued.

"I don't know why, so I was threatening him and so when I went to quit, he had all these text messages of everything.

"He didn't want to release me. He wanted me to go to rehab and come back in six months and I just felt like I had to break away.

McMahon and Angle clashed over a decade ago

"I felt like I was trapped and if I didn't get out of this situation, something really bad was going to happen. I told Vince, 'I hate to say this, but if you don't release me, I think I'm going to kill myself.'"

McMahon, of course, granted Angle's release immediately after that conversation and despite believing that was the end of his time in the ring back then, he wrestled for well over a decade after.
