'The Scottish Psychopath' has since been feuding with the likes of Seth Rollins and Randy Orton, successfully defending his belt on every occasion so far.
But on thing is missing from his title reign. A live audience to witness it.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, McIntyre won the gold in an empty arena match against Brock Lesnar back in April and seven months on, crowds still haven't been allowed back to arenas.
You've really got to feel for the new champ. His crowning moment at WrestleMania in front of the WWE Universe would have been epic, as would each of his impressive title defences so far.
It seems WWE had huge plans for McIntyre before the coronavirus pandemic hit too.
According to Inside the Ropes, the company were planning to have him defend the WWE Championship against Tyson Fury in the main event of a UK based PPV this year.
Sources told the website that WWE were keen to pair McIntyre becoming the first-ever British world champion with the hunger of the British fanbase to run a major PPV event.
Unfortunately, that will now be near impossible this year.
COVID-19 cases are on the rise again and the UK government has pulled back on plans to allow sports fans limited attendance into arenas and stadiums.
It's a huge shame the pandemic has nixed plans for WWE to run a PPV in the UK. We haven't seen one for over 17 years now when Insurrextion aired for the final time in back in 2003.
While the event will have to be put on hold for now, you can bet the company will circle back around to McIntyre vs Fury at some point.
The match has been teased far too much by both sides for it not to happen down the line.
