Today marks five years since the German officially became Liverpool manager. It’s been a massive half-decade for the Reds, with Klopp at the forefront of Liverpool’s transformation from mediocrity to greatness.

Klopp’s impact at Liverpool cannot be overstated. He now resides in the Reds’ pantheon of managerial greats, alongside the likes of Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley. Not since the 1980s has the club enjoyed such success, winning the Champions League for a sixth time in 2019 and finally getting its hands on a Premier League title in 2020.

His aura is infectious. Only Klopp could rock up to one of his first ever press conferences wearing a Beatles t-shirt and be applauded for ‘just getting it’ rather than ridiculed for trying too hard. Can you imagine if Brendan Rodgers had tried that one?

Indeed, Liverpool have been on an upward trajectory ever since Klopp set foot on Merseyside. Now celebrating his fifth anniversary at the club, we at GiveMeSport thought we’d take a look at 10 of Klopp’s most impressive victories from his time in charge.

Chelsea 1-3 Liverpool | Oct 2015

This was a monumental victory for two reasons: one, it was Klopp’s first major league win in charge of Liverpool; two, it came against the defending champions, on their own patch.

Ramires gave Chelsea an early lead before a brace from Phillip Coutinho and a late strike courtesy of Christian Benteke secured all three points. The manner of Liverpool’s victory was impressive, too, having dominated possession and taken twice as many shots as José Mourinho’s men.

Liverpool 4-3 Borussia Dortmund | Apr 2016

Dejan Lovren goal vs Dortmund

Anfield and big European nights have always had a special relationship, and this occasion proved to be no different. Dortmund scored twice inside the opening 10 minutes, putting them 2-0 up on the night and 3-1 on aggregate.

At half time things looked bleak, but a herculean comeback was just around the corner. Divock Origi got the scoring underway before Coutinho and Mamadou Sakho drew Liverpool level on aggregate, after Marco Reus had struck again for Dortmund. Step up Dejan Lovren, who’s 91st-minute winner sent the Reds dancing into the Europa League semi-finals.

Liverpool 3-0 Villarreal | May 2016

And so, we move on to said semi-finals, and Liverpool arrived at Anfield a goal down after the first leg in Spain. But if there were any doubts as to whether Klopp’s side could mount another comeback, they were quickly put to bed in emphatic fashion.

Liverpool dominated from start to finish. They were somewhat lucky with the opener — a deflected own goal off Bruno Soriano — but it was plain sailing from there on out. Daniel Sturridge made it two before Adam Lallana rounded off another brilliant night for the Reds.

Liverpool 4-3 Manchester City | Jan 2018

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain goal vs Man City

This was a huge win for Klopp, and really signalled that Liverpool had what it took to go toe-to-toe with Pep Guardiola’s side. City were coming off the back of their centurions season and were undefeated this campaign heading into the match at Anfield.

While the scoreline suggests a close affair, this game was largely one-way traffic. Two late goals saved City’s blushes but Liverpool really took the game to them. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened proceedings while the front three of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mané and Mo Salah all helped themselves to goals.

Liverpool 3-0 Manchester City | Apr 2018

Three months later and the Reds were at it again, this time causing Pep headaches in Europe. The clubs were neck-and-neck in the title race and this clash very much felt like a seminal moment. But while City would go on to capture the Premier League by a single point, Klopp would have the last laugh in the Champions League.

Liverpool started like a house on fire and City simply couldn’t contain them. Salah netted after just 12 minutes then Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mané got in on the act, capping a scarcely believable half-time scoreline of 3-0.

Liverpool 5-2 Roma | Apr 2018

Jurgen Klopp Liverpool vs Roma

If you haven’t clocked by now, Liverpool’s vintage of 2017-18 were absolutely devastating going forward. Before the signings of Alisson and Virgil van Dijk, Klopp’s tactics seemed to be: if you can’t keep them out, outscore them.

That much was evident when the Reds blitzed their way past Roma in the Champions League semi-finals. Liverpool had way too much for their Italian counterparts on the night, with braces from Salah and Firmino and a goal from Mané crowning yet another epic win.

Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona | May 2019

Arguably Klopp’s most famous European night in the Anfield dugout. From Trent Alexander-Arnold’s quickly-taken corner to Georginio Wijnaldum’s two goals in three minutes, this was a masterclass from start to finish.

Liverpool were 3-0 down on aggregate after being humbled at the Camp Nou by Lionel Messi and co. but a resurgent Reds quickly found their mojo and got fans dreaming inside seven minutes with Origi’s opener. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Spurs 0-2 Liverpool | Jun 2019

Liverpool vs Spurs Origi Champions League Final

Let’s talk about six, baby. Not the most enthralling of encounters, but how could we not include Liverpool’s Champions League Final victory? A controversial early handball really set the tone in this one, as Salah duly converted the resulting penalty after just two minutes.

The game became a tad dull from here on out. Not that Liverpool fans will care, and they were sent into a state of delirium late on thanks to Origi, who’s 87th-minute strike sealed the first ever European trophy of Klopp’s career.

Liverpool 5-2 Everton | Dec 2019

Last season marked Klopp’s apex at Liverpool. The Reds romped their way to the Premier League title, making a mockery of the competition to claim the league by a colossal 18-point margin.

One of the more memorable victories came against city-rivals Everton. Liverpool smashed their adversaries, with Origi (twice), Shaqiri, Mané and Wijnaldum all finding the back of the net.

Leicester City 0-4 Liverpool | Dec 2019

Trent Alexander-Arnold celebration vs Leicester

It may not stick in the minds of too many neutrals, but Liverpool’s four-goal rout of Leicester on Boxing Day was another extremely impressive result for Klopp. At the time, the Foxes were flying high, sitting just behind Liverpool in second place.

Alexander-Arnold’s man of the match performance swiftly helped reestablish the power balance, though, as Liverpool dominated Leicester. For Liverpool, the result powered them on to the title, for Leicester, it proved a knock-out blow and derailed their entire season.
