Lionel Messi will don the Argentina jersey tonight as South America's World Cup qualification campaign finally kicks off.

The Barcelona superstar will be looking to guide La Albiceleste to another major tournament in order to try and win his first international trophy.

Messi has lost three major finals with Argentina (one World Cup and two Copa Americas) and time is running out for the 33-year-old to secure silverware with his country.

However, the notion that Messi has struggled on the international stage is ridiculous. After all, this is a man who's scored 70 goals and delivered 47 assists in 138 games with Argentina.

He averages 0.847 goal contributions per game for his country, while also delivering a plethora of his famous dribbles during his 15 years of service.

Imagine thinking this guy has been a flop on the international stage?!

Yes, trophies have eluded the great man and with the Argentine team lacking the quality of halcyon days, it's unlikely Messi's quest for major accolades with his country will have a happy ending.

But based on his performances and statistics, Messi is one of the greatest to have played in the international arena.

One of the 33-year-old's finest ever performances for La Albiceleste came against Ecuador back in 2017.

Argentina's hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup hung in the balance and they simply had to win in order to secure passage to sport's biggest spectacle.

On a horrendous pitch in Quito, Messi delivered when his country needed him the most, scoring a hat-trick after Argentina had fell behind with just 38 seconds on the clock.

He's Barcelona's go-to man when it gets tough and it's the same when he wears the blue and white of Argentina - the GOAT!
