Gareth Southgate could not have asked for more from his experimental England side as Wales were beaten 3-0 at Wembley. Jack Grealish produced a superb display, Dominic Calvert-Lewin netted on his debut, and no fewer than 17 players were given their chance to impress. Joining Calvert-Lewin on the scoresheet were Conor Coady and Danny Ings, both of whom delighted in their first international goals. The Wolves defender might have scored earlier but fired over the bar. When he did find the back of the net, he had Kieran Trippier to thank for a pinpoint free-kick into the box.Ings' overhead kick may have been the more aesthetically pleasing of the two strikes, but Coady's was equally sentimental and he expressed how much the moment meant to him in his post-match interview. The 27-year-old told ITV:"I'm still in shock to be honest, it'll live with me forever. It's an amazing night for me. It's just an incredible night honestly.
"I can't explain it. To play with these players is incredible for me, the feeling of it and everything about playing at Wembley for England - I'll never forget it.
"You want to come and impress, everyone does, but I want to help whenever I'm called upon. I will make sure I'm ready and I'll give 110 per cent every time I play for my country."
Questions have been asked as to the logic of playing the friendly at all, but Coady's humility was a reminder of how cherished international games can still be.
A clean sheet was one thing, and it will not have gone unnoticed by Southgate, but Coady can't have predicted making his mark at the other end - especially after going 111 games for club and country without a goal.
The last time he scored was in April 2018 for Wolves against Bolton in the Championship.
And to top his night off, the centre-back finished the match with the captain's armband - which says much about a side that has played more minutes in the EFL than of Premier League football.
