As focus shifts from the Continental Cup back to the Women's Super League, Spurs icon Wendy Martin eagerly awaits to watch her former side take on Manchester United.

All eyes will be on The Hive as Tottenham host the Red Devils, who have already handed debuts to new super signings Christen Press and Tobin Heath. But for fellow USA international Alex Morgan, the wait continues.

"It makes me really proud to see how far the club has come," Martin told GIVEMESPORT. "It’s a tribute to the work that Karen [Hills] and Juan [Amoros] have been doing at the club – they’ve created a team that is highly regarded by one of the best players in the world. It’s an incredible signing and I just wish I was still there to be training alongside her!"

Tottenham vs Man Utd

Morgan, who came third in last year's Ballon d'Or rankings, could be deployed on Saturday against Man United, a side Martin has urged her former club to be prepared for. Casey Stoney's team are currently fourth in the WSL table, level on points with holding champions Chelsea.

"Hopefully they [Spurs] will be going into the game with confidence, whereas United are going in off the back of a loss," Martin continued, reflecting on the opening round of the Conti Cup. Tottenham delivered a spanking to Championship side London City after slotting four home. Whilst United struggled against north-west rivals Liverpool and slumped to a 3-1 defeat on the road.

"Manchester United have a lot of quality, they’re a very threatening and attacking side. They score goals from all over the pitch. I think that makes them a big threat. Katie Zelem controls the midfield, she’s a threat from set pieces," Martin said on the United skipper.

'Spurs have got every chance'

"Spurs are a very organised squad and I know Karen and Juan will have been working exceptionally hard this week to put a game-plan together to ensure that they go out there on Saturday and they pay attention to the finer detail. Spurs have got every chance against a very talented Man United team.

"It’s going to be difficult but performing to their game-plan for the full 90 minutes will be absolutely key."

On Sunday, Chelsea will vie to put some daylight between them and potential title competition Manchester City, who have also welcomed two of their own USWNT stars to the club. Rose Lavelle grabbed her first goal for the Citizens on Wednesday during her full debut against Everton.

City are two spots behind the reigning champions, who occupy third place on goal difference. New manager Gareth Taylor will hope they can cause an upset and gain an early advantage on Emma Hayes' Blues. 

"There’s so much talent that’s going to be on show in that game, it’s incredible to think about," Martin continued. "That’s why I think the fact BT Sport are showing the games is brilliant news for women’s football. It’s also helping to maintain interest and momentum in the growth of women’s football especially at this time where fans are unable to attend games."

Hayes' incredible trophy record

The former midfielder also paid respect to Hayes, who now boasts an impressive eight major honours with Chelsea.

"I first came across Emma when she assisted Vic Akers at Arsenal and even then, as quite a young coach, her level of knowledge and attention to detail was incredible. So I’m not surprised she’s created such a strong squad at Chelsea." 

Hayes will have record signing Pernille Harder at her disposal on Sunday as well as Matildas star Sam Kerr and PFA Player of the Year Bethany England. The Blues will lock horns against current FA Cup holders Man City at Kingsmeadow as they look to close down current league leaders Arsenal.
