Manchester United have a huge decision to make.

The club have been in roundly terrible form at the start of the campaign and may have already reached their nadir.

They welcomed Tottenham Hotspur, and former manager Jose Mourinho, to Old Trafford at the weekend and were thumped 6-1.

Bruno Fernandes scored the opening goal from the penalty spot, of course, after just two minutes but then it all fell apart.

Tanguy Ndombele equalised on four minutes, both Son Heung-Min and Harry Kane scored braces, while Serge Aurier was also on the scoresheet.

Anthony Martial was sent off with the score at 2-1 and United subsequently collapsed.

The Red Devils were beaten on the opening day by Crystal Palace, too, losing 3-1 at Old Trafford, while they were perhaps fortunate to beat Brighton & Hove Albion, who hit the post or the woodwork three times during their encounter at the AMEX Stadium.

And it has led to intense discussion over the future of current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Spurs, of course, are well aware of the talents of Mauricio Pochettino, and he remains on the job market.

Various reports have suggested that United could make an approach for the Argentine if results continue to slide but The Athletic has now outlined United’s stance on the prospect of hiring Pochettino.

They report that, while industry sources they have contacted say Pochettino could become a target should United’s form continue to slide, there has been no contact between the two parties.

The players are said to be supportive of the Norwegian and the club remain insistent that there is no danger of Solskjaer being sacked at this point.

United are currently 16th in the Premier League and have conceded as many goals as Fulham, who are rock bottom. Following the international break, they face Newcastle, Chelsea, and Arsenal in the Premier League, and PSG and RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Act now.

United have absolutely no reason to wait to appoint Pochettino, who is the best manager currently on the market.

He turned Spurs from an apathetic group of flops into genuine title challengers and one has to feel that he could do the same thing with United.

He never spent a fortune at Spurs, either, meaning that he would not be asking Ed Woodward for a war chest.

United face a difficult Champions League group and a remarkably tough run of fixtures following the resumption of domestic proceedings.

Sacking Solskjaer now and bringing Pochettino in should be the only option.
