Brazil kicked off their 2022 World Cup Qualifying campaign in merciless fashion early this morning, thrashing Bolivia 5-0.

Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino was one of the stars of the show, helping the Selecao continue their run of never having lost a World Cup qualifier at home - 55 games and counting.

The 29-year-old grabbed Brazil's second and third goals of the evening, taking his overall tally for the South American nation to 15 goals in 45 appearances.

Firmino has struggled to find the back of the net in a Liverpool shirt over the past 12 months or so, scoring just 12 goals in all competitions in 2019/20.

This season, the hardworking Brazilian is yet to get off the mark in five appearances for the Reds and turned in a woeful performance in the 7-2 loss against Aston Villa last Sunday.

Firmino in action vs Villa

Much of Firmino's struggles appear to be down to the fact that he's virtually asked to play as an unorthodox midfielder in order for Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane to operate as wide strikers.

It's a tactic that has paid dividends in recent years, but perhaps Liverpool need to change their approach in order to get the best out of Firmino.

For Brazil this morning, the former Hoffenheim man operated as a standard number nine in Tite's starting XI and as fate would have it, he scored two poacher's goals as a result.

Firmino's two goals vs Bolivia

You rarely ever see Firmino in such a position when playing for Liverpool, as that space in the box is usually accommodated by Salah or Mane.

Now, we're not saying Klopp needs to completely change the way the Brazilian operates in his playing system, far from it.

But surely it's worth affording him a bit more freedom to get in the box for him to utilise his natural attacking instinct, right?

Back in 2017/18, Firmino operated in this manner for Liverpool and unsurprisingly, it was his best goal scoring season for the Reds.

In 54 games across all competitions, he scored 27 times, 10 of those goals coming in just 13 Champions League outings.

If Liverpool are to win the Premier League again this season, they need to get the best out of Firmino and to do so, Klopp may have to take a leaf out of Tite's book.
