Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation remains something of a conundrum.

They have a genuinely world-class option in Alisson Becker who is, fitness permitting, always the club’s first-choice.

But he has now been ruled out for as many as six weeks with a shoulder injury sustained in training.

And that means Adrian has been forced to deputise.

The former West Ham United goalkeeper joined the club on a free transfer in 2019, replacing Simon Mignolet and coming in to provide back-up to the Brazilian.

The stopper had been released by West Ham United and he has gone on to make 21 appearances for the Reds.

In that time, he has conceded 33 goals and kept just four clean sheets; he was in goal at the weekend as the Reds were amazingly thrashed 7-2 by Aston Villa.

Of course, the domestic transfer window remains open, with the club able to buy players from the Championship until the end of next week.

And Jurgen Klopp has now been urged to swoop for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya to provide some competition to Adrian and some genuine back-up to Alisson.

Raya was linked with a potential move to Arsenal but the deal did not come to fruition.

Speaking to Football Insider, Darren Bent has urged the club to swoop for the Spaniard, who has played for Blackburn Rovers, Southport, on loan, and Brentford throughout his career.

He said: “For me, I think it is an issue that they need to address but where can you find a backup goalkeeper now?

“We are talking about the Premier League champions so it shouldn’t be that hard but where do you get a goalkeeper that is going to be happy coming into the team to play for six weeks until Allison comes back and then you’re back on the bench.

“It has to be a concern because they have seen first-hand what happens when you don’t have an adequate backup goalkeeper.

“The only one who I can think of as a potentially good back up goalkeeper is David Raya, maybe him.

“At the highest level now you can’t just rely on your one goalkeeper.

“The days of Brad Friedel or David James where you can go so long without getting an injury, seasons without getting an injury seem to be a thing of the past.

“I think you need two very good goalkeepers now. They need to find one whose close to Allison, he’s never going to be as good as Allison.”

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Raya is an intriguing option.

The 25-year-old Spaniard is young enough to improve exponentially and will surely benefit from learning under Alisson.

Last season, Raya enjoyed an excellent season with Brentford as they reached the play-off final, where they were beaten by Fulham at Wembley.

He made 46 appearances in the Championship, keeping 16 clean sheets and conceding just 38 goals.

While he has a contract until 2023, he is valued at just £3.6m by Transfermarkt and one has to think Liverpool could meet any asking price the lower-league side sets.

One thing is for certain: Liverpool need to find a solution because they simply cannot rely on Adrian for any length of time.
