The Lionel Messi saga dominated this summer's transfer window for a couple of weeks.

In a sensational turn of events, the Argentine - renowned by many as the greatest footballer of all time - confirmed his desire to leave the club he's spent his entire career at.

But the Blaugrana weren't going to let him go without a fight.

Messi believed he could trigger a clause in his contract that allows him to walk away at the end of each season, but Barca were adamant it didn't apply by the time he activated it.

Acting to avoid any messy legal proceedings, the six-time Ballon d'Or winner agreed to stay at Camp Nou for one more season.

But what happens next summer could be a different story.

Messi is expected to push for a move away again and there's one place he'll likely end up... Manchester City.

Messi could be on his way to Man City

The Premier League side were heavy favourites to sign him before his U-turn and are expected to complete a deal in 2021.

So, can they actually afford it? Well, according to the club's chief operating officer Omar Berrada, they absolutely can.

The Man City COO has claimed plans have already been made to add Messi to the squad - and in turn - reunite him with Pep Guardiola.

Messi could reunite with Guardiola

"He's the best player in the world, he's the best player of his generation. I think any club in the world would like to explore the possibility of him joining their team," Berrada told the Manchester Evening News.

"He's probably an exception to potential investments that we'd do. But our planning has been done with this current squad and it is being considered with the current opportunities that we have.

"For every single position we have to be prepared because there can be so many things that can happen.

"But, at the same time, I think we have the financial strength and system ability to make that investment when required."

Wow. That's one hell of a statement. It sounds like Messi to Man City is ON.
