Liverpool are in desperate need of a new back-up goalkeeper.

Adrian has proven over the past few months that he is simply not good enough, the Spaniard turning in a woeful performance in the 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa.

The former West Ham 'keeper gifted a goal to Ollie Watkins for Villa's first of the evening and looked shaky throughout the entirety of the game.

With Alisson Becker injured, the thought of Adrian standing between the posts in next Saturday's Merseyside derby is one that will make Liverpool fans shudder.

But it seems the Reds are adamant that the Spaniard will not feature against Everton, as they're already lining up his replacement.

Adrian in action vs Villa

As reported by the Mirror, Liverpool are looking to sign Jack Butland from Stoke City and he could then feature against the Toffees next weekend.

While the European summer transfer window ended on Monday, clubs from the Premier League and the Football League can still conduct business between themselves until Friday.

Butland's career has been on the decline for some time now. The 27-year-old lost his place in the Stoke team back in July to Adam Davies and hasn't featured since.

The former Birmingham City man was once tipped as a future England regular and he earned five senior caps for the Three Lions.

Butland with England

But his career is in ruins right now and Stoke are keen to offload the highly-paid shot-stopper.

Were Liverpool to swoop in, it's unlikely the Championship club would demand a large transfer fee - or one at all - due to the fact Butland has just 12 months remaining on his contract.

If the Reds can tie him down to a deal with a modest salary, the move is ideal for both teams and the player himself.

Can Jurgen Klopp work his magic and help Butland fulfil his potential?
