Who is the Premier League's greatest ever striker?

It's a debate that will probably never be settled. Alan Shearer's record 260 goals place him firmly in the mix, but Thierry Henry was unmatched for sheer ability.

Now, Chelsea fans will argue Didier Drogba deserves a place in that conversation.

The Ivorian had it all. He was a powerhouse who could score anything from the gritty, right-place, right-time goals, to outrageous long-range thunderbolts.

In his first spell in west London, the striker got 157 goals in 341 appearances under his belt.

When he returned, he added another seven, an overall tally which puts him fourth highest in Chelsea's history.

Where do you begin with Henry? A very different style of player, one who boasted more panache and was of course the talisman of one of the greatest sides English football has ever seen.

Months ago, one fan wrote a compelling thread suggesting Drogba was better than the Arsenal legend using stats.

Drogba

However, their Premier League and Champions League exploits have now been compared again by Twitter user @LePinchre and this time there is only one winner.

The thread meticulously combs through the two forwards' respective careers and it's banished the myth that Henry was somehow inferior.

Firstly, it points out that when the Frenchman won the Champions League (with Barcelona), six of his eight goals came in the knockout stages. That's compared to four of Drogba's eight in Chelsea's triumphant 2012 campaign.

In fact, nobody could have accused Henry of being a flat-track bully. A record of  64 goal contributions against top four teams and in the European knockout stages proves that - Drogba had 41.

Then we have individual honours. Henry won four Premier League Golden Boots to Drogba's two and was named Player of the Season twice, something his rival never achieved. Drogba also never made the three-man Ballon d'Or shortlist, which Henry managed twice.

Thierry Henry

There was a school of thought that Drogba carried Chelsea on some occasions. The stats beg to differ, at least when he's compared to Henry. Guess who had 58 league match-winners and who had 31?

The Gunners hero didn't achieve any of that through selfishness either, with 20 more assists in just four more appearances. All the while, he surpassed 20+ goals a season four times. Drogba only scored more than 15 goals a season twice, so there's no argument about consistency.

Some of the thread is a little harsh on the ex-Blues man. It points out that Henry won the 1998 World Cup, but he was part of a stunning French outfit that included Zinedine Zidane. Nobody can blame Drogba for failing to reach the knockout stages with the Ivory Coast.

Nor should they criticise the fact that at 22, Henry was winning trophies while Drogba was playing for Giungamp.

Nobody is saying Drogba wasn't one of English football's great strikers - but fans will want to think twice before comparing him to Henry again.
