Manchester United fans were hardly over the moon when it emerged that the club were signing 33-year-old free agent Edinson Cavani on transfer deadline day.
Supporters had been hoping for Jadon Sancho’s arrival all summer, but United’s refusal to pay Borussia Dortmund’s £108 million asking price means the talented England winger remains at Signal Iduna Park.
Cavani certainly felt like a panic buy. But that doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t be a success at Old Trafford.
Remember, this is a striker who has scored goals consistently throughout his career.
He netted 200 goals in 301 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain - making him the French club’s all-time leading scorer - and has also bagged 50 goals in 116 games for Uruguay.
“Manchester United is one of the greatest clubs in the world, so it is a real honour to be here,” Cavani, who has been handed the club’s famous number seven shirt, told United’s official website. “I’ve worked really hard during the time off and I feel eager to compete and represent this incredible club.”
Indeed, anyone who has watched Cavani over the years will all complement his extraordinary work ethic.
Described as a “box-to-box striker” by South American football expert Tim Vickery, Cavani is likely to become an instant fan favourite at Old Trafford.
Ahead of his debut - which won't be against Newcastle United on October 17 but is likely to be against his former club PSG three days later - Cavani has wowed supporters by showing off his impressive physique on Instagram.

Not bad for a man who turns 34 in February!
“He is no fat, pure muscle, like a Greek god,” a source recently told The Athletic, explaining just how fit Cavani is.
“His body fat percentage is astonishing. He is fit and intense, and amazing in the air. He runs like a maniac.”
There’s been some amusing reaction to the photo of Cavani’s impressive physique from United fans on Twitter.

It seems fans are feeling a lot more optimistic about Cavani’s arrival after seeing the evidence of the hard work he’s putting in off the pitch.
It’s been a while since United had a player who justified wearing the No. 7 shirt - and perhaps Cavani is about to silence his doubters.
