France vs Portugal wasn’t exactly the blockbuster that everybody was building it up to be.

As the UEFA Nations League progressed with the second international break of the season this weekend, everybody had their eyes on the clash taking place at the Stade de Frances.

Aside from the fact that France and Portugal are two of Europe’s finest international teams at the best of times, their latest meeting marked their first clash since the infamous Euro 2016 final.

Euro 2016 final take two

Portugal rained on the host nation’s parade with a shock victory in the ‘City of Lights’ with Eder scoring a famous, long-range winner in extra-time to make history for the Iberian country.

It was a massive upset considering Portugal wouldn’t have even reached the knockout stages if it wasn’t for the new format and they’d only won a single game within 90 minutes all tournament long.

However, the biggest difference between that famous night and the reunion on Sunday was the role of Portugal’s star man and captain Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo plays 90 minutes

Although the serial Ballon d’Or winner had the last laugh four years ago, he had actually started the final in tears after being forced off the pitch injured.

This time around, though, the world champions had to put up with Ronaldo for 90 minutes and to tell you the truth, they did a pretty good job considering how well he’s been performing in 2020.

Besides, we are talking about the footballing behemoth that recently became just the second player in history to score 100 international goals and is well on course for the outright record.

Ronaldo meets his nemesis

But alas, France held their own in a drab 0-0 draw and one player who could hold their head high in particular was Bayern Munich’s Lucas Hernadez, who was deployed out of position at left-back.

Going head-to-head against Ronaldo so many times when you’re not necessarily playing where you’re most comfortable would be a disaster for a lot of players, but not for Hernandez.

That’s because some fans on social media opined that Hernandez actually ‘pocketed’ Ronaldo during the goalless draw and two fantastic clips seem to support that fact.

Ronaldo pocketed by Hernandes

Firstly, Hernandez made defending one-on-one against Ronaldo look like a piece of cake:

And then, the Bayern defender produced a fantastic block to stop Ronaldo potentially scoring:

You can even check out Hernandez’s full highlights up against Ronaldo down below:

And if that still doesn’t satisfy you, then enjoy the fact that it’s not even the first time that Hernandez has done this to Ronaldo:

The Juventus superstar continuing his goal drought against Les Blues came in no small part because of Hernandez’s fantastic performance on the left, defensive flank.

Tough night for Ronaldo

However, that’s not to say that Ronaldo was shut out for the entire game as he stung the hands of Hugo Lloris just a few moments before the final whistle with a fizzing, near-post effort.

The goalless draw means that Portugal top of Group A3 on the same amount of points as France, but with a superior goal difference while also being comfortably clear of Croatia and Sweden.

Only time will tell which teams will progress to the UEFA Nations League finals, but when Hernandez empties his pockets tonight… ah, who am I kidding? You know the gag.
