Manchester United have a history of splashing the cash on teenage players.
So it was no surprise when they spent £37 million on 18-year-old Ivorian Amad Traore on deadline day.
The former Atalanta ace wasn’t the first teenager to join the Red Devils for more than £30m. He won’t be the last, either.
The Sun have examined the most expensive teenage XI in Premier League history and seven of the 11 players were signed by Man United.
Some have been hits, others were misses. Traore will hope to be in the former category.
Here’s the team in full.
Goalkeeper | Thibaut Courtois
- Transfer: Genk to Chelsea (2011)
- Cost: £8m
Chelsea signed a 19-year-old Courtois in 2011, although he had to wait until 2014 to make his debut.
Right-back | Diogo Dalot
- Transfer: Porto to Man Utd (2018)
- Cost: £19m
Dalot was 19 when he joined Man United, but he’s struggled to impress and is currently on loan at AC Milan.
Centre-back | Phil Jones
- Transfer: Blackburn to Man Utd (2011)
- Cost: £16.5m
Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted to sign a 19-year-old Jones in 2011 but things haven't worked out for the Englishman at Old Trafford.
Centre-back | William Saliba
- Transfer: Saint-Etienne to Arsenal (2019)
- Cost: £27m
Arsenal are hopeful that new arrival Saliba, who was 18 when he joined, can be a mainstay in their defence for years to come.
Left-back | Luke Shaw
- Transfer: Southampton to Man Utd (2014)
- Cost: £33m
Shaw's impressive performances as a teenager at Southampton earned him a big-money move to United as an 18-year-old six years ago, but he's failed to show any progress.
Central midfield | Anderson
- Transfer: Porto to Man Utd (2007)
- Cost: £20m
The less said about Anderson's spell at Old Trafford, the better. He was 19 when he joined.
Right wing | Amad Traore
- Transfer: Atalanta to Man Utd (2020)
- Cost: £37m
Man United's new signing will officially join the club in January 2021.
Left wing | Anthony Martial
- Transfer: Monaco to Man Utd (2015)
- Cost: £44.5m
Now here's a player who has lived up to the billing. Martial was 19 when he signed for United, and he's been a star in the Premier League.
Forward | Wayne Rooney
- Transfer: Everton to Man Utd (2004)
- Cost: £30m
Rooney joined United after bursting onto the scene with Everton.
He was 18 when he headed to Old Trafford and his immense talent was very noticeable.
Striker | Gabriel Jesus
- Transfer: Palmeiras to Man City (2017)
- Cost: £28.6m
City bought Jesus as a 19-year-old three years ago and while he's had to play second fiddle to Sergio Aguero, he's still been a decent signing.
The total cost of the team is a lofty £298.6 million. And yet you'd hasten to call it an incredible side.News Now - Sport News
