Juan Mata has been a good servant to Manchester United.

The Spaniard joined Man United from Chelsea in 2014, with the Red Devils paying a club record fee of £37.1 million.

In the past six years, Mata has featured 257 times for the club, scoring 50 times.

He's also helped United to four trophies, including a treble in the 2016/17 season.

Now 32, Mata is past his best. He's no longer a regular starter for the club, having made just 19 Premier League appearances last season.

You wouldn't blame Mata for wanting to leave the club and go and enjoy the rest of his playing days abroad.

After all, he has won absolutely everything there is to win in football.

And this summer, he had the opportunity to leave for pastures new as he was offered a stunning contract by an unnamed Saudi club.

According to AS, Mata was offered an eye-watering €16 million-per-year contract.

When this offer was refused, they returned with a €20 million-per-year contract offer.

To put that into context, that was an offer of €384615-per-week, equivalent to €54945-per-day, €2289-per-hour and €38-per-minute.

If he accepted, Mata would have become one of the world's highest-paid players. He would no longer have the pressure of playing for Man United and would have the opportunity to earn a massive pay rise before retirement.

However, Mata wasn't having any of it. He was flattered by the interest shown in him but he wasn't lured by the money.

Instead, he wanted to stay in Manchester and keep competing at the highest level.

Mata believes the club has progressed in the past few years and is convinced that United will win a trophy this season.

GIVEMESPORT'S JAMES STROUD SAYS:

Wow. Fair play to Mata. It's refreshing that a player can refuse such a pay-rise in order to play at the highest level.

But I don't quite share Mata's optimism that United will win a trophy this season...

Nevertheless, I wish him the best of luck and hope he thrives for the remainder of his time as a United player.
